I have read that the early 'prototype' HPs were marked PATROLMAN.

Wouldn't a "highwayman" be an anti-Patrolman?

Yup, I doubt Smith would ever put the name of a robber and thief on one of their guns.

Hello Kyle
The "Highway Partolman" got it's name from Carl Helstrom's wife and start it's life in April 1954. Here is a Pre-28 that shipped Just Two Months into production of the Highway Patrolman series being June 1954. It is stamped "Highway Patrolman" as shown in a Larger Picture format to show the barrel stamping better and is wearing it's correct serial numbered stocks as shown. I hope this answer's your question. Regards, Hammerdown

Hello NFrameFred
I explained why the Picture format had to be larger in my post, you must have not Read it ? In the Medium Picture dimmensional format, it was hard to make out clearly the exact "Highway Patrolman" Placement or wording of the stamping on the barrel and I did not want to cut the gun's original picture down ruining the picture I had of it. if the size of it shown bothered you, I Truly apologize for it, But I do feel it shows an anwer's to the Original Posters question which was my Intent in responding...

It was joke dude, hence the "" icon - just trying (and obviously not succeeding) to make a funny . . . .

Since this thread is putting to rest a couple of HP issues, can someone post the REAL answer to what the lazy H w/4 dots means??? Please??? I have heard so many strange answers to this and it would be real nice to get the real deal answer.

It's just a "glyph" - as far as I've been able to determine in everything I've read it was artistic touch and has no hidden significance - given the wording, it just separates the ".357 CTG." label from the "Highway Patrolman" appellation.
