New guy who is suddenly an S&W owner.
First, hello my first post. I retired with 20+ yrs ago with 20yrs in Special Forces. I shot a lot of things a lot of times then but not two many revolvers and am now just getting back into shooting.
My brother-in-law just inherited several pistols and shotguns. Among them were a: late 60s early 70s S&W K-38 and K-22 "Target Masterpiece", a Colt MK III NM 38 special mid range and a 1955 K-32 pre-16.The first three were really clean and would be 98s instead of 95s if he had the boxes. The blueing was more faded on the K-32 but no gouges or scratches and had the newer S&W grips making it a 90. We took it to Cabela's near my house in Hoffman Estates, IL as he was looking to sell them. Though the offer was a bit low, they were very up front about saying they pay 65% of Blue Book and when the guy was looking at the K-32 he said he wasn't sure about somethings and wanted to get it right, so he had their S&W expert look at it the next day. He verified it as a 1955 pre-16 and even bumped the price up on the models 14 and 17 to $260 and $275. They offered $1350 for the K-32 pre 16 and $900 for the Colt. I told him not to get into much of a hurry to sell. Two days later he went to another dealer just west of there and inquired about the 3 S&Ws. They asked him what he thought they were worth and checking to see how up front they were he said he had no idea. With that they offered him $200 for all three. He justed said he would have to check with his brother and walked out. I shoot at their range as they have 3 eight laners but I'll never sell there and may not even buy. I told him to maybe try a gun show but he wanted to sell. He went back to Cabela's and sold the K-32. I thought about buying it myself but I shoot, not collect. I had just bought a Glock 17 engraved with our Special Forces crest and Trijicon night sights and wanted to get a Kimber Super Carry Custom HD so it was out of my budget. I did buy the other two S&Ws though, the K-22 and K-38 for $550 with, ammo and extras and offered him first shot at buying them back if I decide to sell.
Well anyways if someone is interested in a K-32 pre 16 it should be available through Cabela's library soon I'm guessing about $2000. I understand there wer only 3060 made over 30+ yrs and I've seen some other sight threads from 2004 and 2008 where they were paying $2300 to $2500 for refurbished ones and those with boxes.

You got one heck of a deal on the K-22 and K-38. Both wonderful wonderful guns that are pure joy to shoot.
If you decide to sell, I would suggest posting here rather than taking to a dealer. Your K-22 and K-38 would likely both easily bring $550+ EACH.

Welcome to the forum.
You bought the K22 and he threw in the K38 for free. Both should be great shooters.
Thank you for your service.

I'm betting you don't decide to sell. Those are some great revolvers, and for no more than you've got in them, they are excellent investments for the future. You can enjoy shooting them and still at least double your money if you ever decide to part with them. Congrats on making such a great deal!

Good to hear that Cabelas was upfront about the purchasing policy. If BIL would have come here first he would have made a few more $$.

If he was patient and willing to do his homework he sure could've made alot more $$$. I'm glad for the OP that he didn't. It's good to see somebody get a deal. I just hope it's my turn one day.

OP, about the dealer who offerred $200-I'd avoid them for sure...you now he's screwing everyone who walks in the door one way or another, buying or selling. I am all for people making a good living, but that is way beyond what is right.
Enjoy your Smiths-they are both very fine revolvers.

K-32
I was at Cabela's today to pick up an order and get some stuff for the other two guns. Thought I'd take a look at the K-32. It was already sold for $2100 and my brother-in-law just now found the box. (see post #11)

If possible, your brother-in-law should find out who bought the K32 and offer to sell him the box. That way he could recoup at least a small part of the money he lost by selling the gun at Cabelas (instead of here). And, I'm sure the person who bought the gun would be more than glad to buy the box.

K-32 pre 16 box
Understandably they don't want to give out that information. If whoever just bought a K-32 pre 16 from Cabela's reads this forum I have your box. I'm going to handle this for my BIL
The box of course doesn't have the gun's Ser.# on it but it is from that time period, in this case 1955. I was going to put it on Ebay but thought I would show it here first, as was rightly suggested I should have done with the gun, (I posted earlier as a new guy to this forum) If anyone is interested in making an honest offer I will consider it before I go to Ebay. I'm new to this forum stuff but assume you can send me a personal message/ e-mail through this site. He also just found and gave me what I believe to be the original grips for the K-22 and K-38 he sold me along with a set of Harrett's "Shooting Star" grips, in the box, and another leather covered rug.
The box has been sold. 7/6/11

Also pics of the K-22 and K-38 But what to shoot?
Here are some quick pictures of the two guns I bought. I didn't pose them very well but they are in nice shape. My next task is to see what they like to eat. For the 22 I was going to start out with Remington; sub sonic, golden and target by Eley Ltd. I have CCI mini mags for my 10/22 but I don't know about shooting those. For the K-38 I haven't decided. I have a box of Winchester 130gr FMJ USA. Any suggestions on either gun?

My old K22 is most accurate with the CCI mini-mags.

Be very careful shooting the S&Ws. I bought one last year and inherited one from my Dad. I now own a bunch. The Les Baers, 9mm and .45 and the Ed Brown are upset that they don't get out as much as they did.
Then there is the reloading and installing the new spring kits.
Then there is the constant chatter about the next S&W I bought, or the other guy bought, and pretty soon it's off to Gun Broker, the for sale forum here and every gun shop and gun show around.
My M18 likes Federal bulk .22.
Mt .38s like 125 gr lrn over 3.0 Bullseye.
Welcome.
