Ser. #'s of stolen guns
I noted in another thread that Saxonpig posted the ser.# of a stolen M29. Not wanting to hi-jack a thread, I am posting as a new topic.
I too have two S&W's to post as stolen. Altho many years ago & probably no chance for any prosecution, I would like a chance to negotiate for their return.
Would the owner of this board consider a forum column dedicated to posting the ser.#'s of stolen & missing S&W's?
I would like to see a new column to list S&W only guns with the ser.# & model as the thread title followed by your state. That would make it rather easy to search by number.
What say ye?

Sounds like an excellent idea to me. I would also suggest that information as to which Law Enforcement agency took the report, the date of the report, and possibly the case number be required in the post.

I was thinking about this the other day. Seems like a good idea to me.

I'm not being arbitrary here. How will this help? If you buy a stolen gun accidentally, notice the # on the list and turn it in for investigation, you may wind up in litigation for years. The original ower my have gotten ins. money for it. Does he now have to return the money, even though it's been recovered but held as evidence for maybe years? If you bought the gun from an unknowing party he may also wind up in the trick bag. Is that what your looking for? I am not arguing, just trying to see what the point is.

Mr. Mack,
Have you ever seen a gun offered for sale, cash only, today only, really cheap. Ever wonder if it is truly a bargain or too hot too handle?
I have & would pass the info. to any claiming party if I had access to such a list.
As for my lost guns, they were taken in a home burglary in Puyallup, Wa. on Mar.5, 1987. I lost a 5" M41 ser# A592352 & a blue 8 3/8
M29-2 ser# N499073.
If further info. is wanted, refer to the Pierce county, Wa. sheriff's incident #87 064 221.
If anyone knows where I can locate either gun, I would like to negotiate a buy-back.

I think this is a good idea. My guess is that many ( most ) folks on this site would be willing to return a gun to it's rightful owner even if there was some financial loss involved.

Stolen guns should be returned to their rightful owner. If the insurance company paid a claim on the theft then they become the rightful owner. While most things have an expiration date, guns are the only article I'm aware of that, once they are entered into the NCIC database, are never removed until a recovery is made.

No.
We won't be listing stolen guns.
This comes up every few months.
Some data in the list would be accurate, some would be inaccurate and possibly cause more trouble than legit recoveries.
There may be websites by now of for stolen gun lists- I've seen a couple try to start up.

This is one reason we're not going to do this.
Theses guns have been missing 24 years. Will posting them here make them turn up? Sure, possible but not probable.
Can you understand how the board would be choked with thousands of decades-old posted lists- some accurate and some inaccurate?
