Default More Grist for the Grips Mill

I got these Herrett checkered shooting stars for $19.95 on eBay.

They fit my 27-2 very well.

The finish is cheap and shiney all over and very thick on the checkering.

I will use a jelly chemical stripper, sand with 400 grit sandpaper and finish with Tru-Oil.

I will try to post pictures along the way:

Lou

Lou ... With a little refinishing to your own satisfaction, that $20 investment will yield grips that go for over $100. Nice score!

I don't think those are Herrett grips. My guess is Sile.

(I'll eat crow, of course, if you show me a Herrett label on the inside....)

Herrett's uncheckered Shooting Stars. The Herrett's line went custom a few years back and all (or most) of the production became a custom-order item. The Shooting Stars fell into that category. Nice stocks for revolvers w/o the checkering. Hard to say on value...$30.00 to $50.00, I guess. Depends on condition and how bad someone wants them.

Default Checkered

The checkering on Bushmaster's grips is different than the checkering on the original production Shooting Stars.

What counts is how they look and feel in the hand...and they do look good.

As pictured in 1970 and 1972 Gil Hebard catlogs.

The first variation was checkered all around the front of the grips, while the second - after about 1972 - was not. $13.95!!

$15.95 for uncheckered presentation grade.

The Shooting Stars pictured on the Herrett web site look more like the early stocks to me.

I like the first version much better than the second.

Im sure you will be happy with them when you are done. Here's a set of Herrett Shooting Stars that I modified for my 1959 vintage Colt Officer Match in 22 LR. I sanded off the thumb swells and checkering and fit them to the gun going for a Jordan Trooper type grip. You can have a lot of fun with these grips as they are relitively cheap and plentifull.

Soaking in acetone will do the trick, use a disposable aluminum dish or pan, be sure to cover it. Dangerous stuff, highly flamable, but it really works.
