Default Model 29 issues

hello all
great site by the way.
I just acquired this 29 that has been through a house fire. it then set in the waterlogged dabris and is rusted pretty bad.
I have it dissassembled except for the cylinder.
I can not get it to swing out. I'm a novice on wheel guns.
I have WD-40 showing flexing and movement at the lower pivot point. I believe there is a pin in cyl. center rear that the thumb bar on the left side should push that pin in and allow cyl. to swing out. correct? That pin will not push forward. Hammer taps and a punch hasnt moved it.
Am I missing something?
thanks, jerry.

I would pull the grips and put it in some diesel fuel for a few weeks to loosen it up then try it.Then I think I would send it back to S&W to be checked out before I ever fired it.

Jerrysbad,

Welcome to the forum. The soaking in diesel fuel is a good idea. Also, a great penetrating oil that is homemade is a 50/50 mix of automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Just keep putting it on the works you are wanting to free up (not soaking). Maybe use an eye dropper. (for storage, whatever you put the mix in has to be air tight or otherwise the acetone will evaporate)

You are correct in your assumption of the pin in the cylinder and I can explain what you are working with. The thumb piece is attached to the bolt. The bolt is spring loaded from the rear with a spring and plunger. When pushing the thumb piece forward, this causes the bolt to push the center pin (which is also spring loaded inside of the cylinder) forward, which pushes the locking bolt away from the end of the ejector rod, and releasing the cylinder to swing open. The locking bolt is the part that is under the barrel, it is spring loaded also, and is held in place by a cross pin. This locking bolt could be froze also.

Just a little patience and soaking, with either the diesel fuel or the application of the homemade penetrating mix, should free up the works.

Hope this helps
chris

Seems like I remember a thread about a gun that went through a fire and S&W won't have anything to do with them. Am I wrong about that?

Thanks everyone for the tips and advice. I'll keep trying to free it up and gradually apply more force. ( thats what I am good at, paitence and force). I'll certainly be carefull with it and it may end up as a wall hanger.

Well, the patience, penetrating oil and increasing application of force have moved the pin and the cylinder is out. Thanks for the tips and advice. Now the cleaning / restoration begin.
thanks, jerrysbad

Be very careful the heat from the fire can ruin the heat treating of the firearm. Have it checked out or you can end up with a grenade.
