Default Mag disconnect or not for CCW M&P .40?

I just want some opinions on being able to fire with mag out or not? What seems to be the pros & cons of this. Picking up a new M&P compact .40 this week for my CCW,handled one today and absolutely love it.I had the 9C a while back and sold it to my buds girlfriend for her CCW. So I shot the .40 and liked it very much. Ammo just a little bit higher but I shoot 1-2 times a month so not a real factor between 9 and 40.

For civilian CCW use, I don't see any real pros or cons to a mag disconnect. Personally, I don't like them...just one more thing to go wrong, but that's a pretty unlikely scenario.

The thinking is that if you get into a weapon retention issue, you might be able to pop the mag release, and at least your gun can't be used against you. The problem with that, is that to a certain degree, it's built around the idea of a law enforcement officer who happens to be carrying a backup....pop the mag, let the bad guy have the gun-shaped club, and get to your backup as fast as possible.

In a civilian situation, you shouldn't even be drawing the weapon unless you've already decided it's time to make noise (most states it's illegal to brandish the weapon in order to make somebody back off). If it comes out, it's going bang, not being wrestled over. A uniformed LEO situation is much different....the weapon is normally worn exposed, and more available for attempted gun grabs, as well as frequently drawn without being fired, and that's when you wind up wrestling over them.

None of my issued/personally owned carry guns have a mag disconnect. R,

Thumbs up

Thanks Gman, I figured it would suit leos more so than us civilians. And brandishing a weapon here in Fla. is a no no. Pull it to use it only if threat is coming. I was just curious for my purchase choice. I had a G27 and a XD and M&P feels better in point and shoot and just the grip is perfect for my hand. Also conceals nice in shorts and T's.Thanks, appreciate your reply and all others coming in!! Found one .40 S&W M&P compact NIB for $489.00+ tax and background. Sweet!!

I agree with G-ManBart's post and reasoning. I also do not have mag disconnects on my firearms if I can help it. Unfortunately, it comes "stock" on my 4006, so I have no option there. But when I ordered my 40 compact that I got last week, I got it without the mag disconnect or internal lock. Again, that's just me.

Even as an LEO, yes, you can state that you can pop the mag out and let the perp/suspect have the firearm, but it can work the other way around too...if the mag happens to come out, you are also left with a non working firearm too. That wouldn't be such a great idea if the perp/suspect happens to have a firearm him/herself and is able to fire at you while you have to pull a secondary mag to reload.

So, it can go both ways. But I would suggest that it is structured more towards LEOs as G-ManBart stated.

Well worth it. Much smaller and MUCH, MUCH lighter than my steel, full framed 4006. Thus, a joy to carry.

I'm sure you'll like it, indeed.

looking forward to picking it up. No one seem to want the beretta, guess .380s are not in demand these days. i carried it for a short time and just was'nt comfortable, feel alot better with the .40 S&W cartridge over all else except my old RIA compact .45. Too bad it was so heavy, wears on you after awhile the older we get!
