Default Trip to range cut short

Went to the range today. The M&P was doing well. No FTE's today, but then...

Knocked the little pieces out of the Bolt. It is a DTX____ by the way.

Is that the round brass?

Looks like a double-loaded shell that detonated to me.

Ripped the whole rim off of the bottom?

Yikes!

I would have to agree with Spectre on this one. That appears to be an ammunition problem and not a typical OOB.

What brand was it?

I would suspect the round from that brass is still in the barrel and posibly the round before that one which caused that brass to blow out the back...

Nothing in the barrel. It's Federal automatch 325 pack from Walmart.

Is your rifle still new? My 15-22 had the same thing happen. Sent the rifle back to S&W they fixed it and sent it back. Once I got it back it happened again, and S&W fixed it again. Since I got the rifle back the second time I haven't had a problem since. I was shooting Winchester ammo when I had the OOB's, and I switched to Federal since. haven't had the first problem with he Federal.

I bought my rifle in November of 2009. and there were a few people on here that had the same problem. You could tell it was an OOB because you could see how far the round was from being all the way seated in the chamber.

So the extractor came apart. Is the ejector still in place or did it also disappear?

Looks like your standard OOB round to me. You can see the "mushroomed" end where it didnt seat all the way.

I would say send it back to S&W, but when you get it back take it to the range and bring a pair of needle nose so you can tweak the ejector properly so it runs right for YOUR rifle.

Glad no one was hurt

Extractor is still in there. Just the parts in the bolt are gone.
I filled out a request for a shipping slip to send it back.

Exact same thing happened to me also last Presidents Day. I was using Winchester 333. I returned it to S&W and turnaround time was ten days. No free stuff. I tried it out last weekend and it still does not like Winchester. It ate all the Federal Bulk I could feed it.

I've been having issues in several semi autos I have with the winchester 333. I find that the bullets are loose in the casing, more than just able to spin the bullet in the case, actually able to angle the bullet to one side. I'd noticed several time loading various mags that I've angled the bullet, and when this happens the gun generally fails to feed the bullet. Last night on my last shot with a 10/22, the 22 actually fed the bullet, but it didn't fire. I poked the bullet out with a cleaning rod, the bullets had been scraped loading in to the barrel and the case had been creased.

I've always had good luck with Federal bulk 550 packs, and now trying out the CCI blazers. 40 grain, round nose, coated lead, they feed good in everything so far, although I have not tried them in my 15-22 yet. I know people say they have no problems with Winchester, but I'm done with them now. They are only slightly better then the Remington Golden bullets for me, but at least the Remingtons function flawless in my 597's (which happen to hate the winchesters).
