Default Pair of Middle/South GA LEO Guns

Couple of threads running about shotgun/handgun pairs. Here are a couple that served, separately, in middle and South Georgia from the early 70s through the 80s. Probably the early 60s in the case of the shotgun.

The shotgun (I refuse to use the term now in vogue on some other forums) is a High-Standard Riot 18-7 Model-K120 as marked on the barrel. It rode, as I understand it, in the trunk of a Sumter County Deputy Sheriff's patrol car during its career. I bought it about eight years ago when Sumter Co. traded about 10 shotguns to the local NAPA for some new ones. I picked this one because of price and condition. There were a couple of High Standard, three or four 870s, and two or three S&W shotguns. I wish now I had bought the other HS at the $130-ish price. There was a story that the shotguns rode in the trunks of patrol cars that were under water during the Flood of 1994, when TS Alberto dumped 18-21 inches of rain on mid/S Georgia in 48 hours. I haven't found any indications that it was submerged, just bumped around and infrequently cleaned.

The revolver is a Model 19-3 that was used by a civilian security guard at Warner Robins AF Base during the 70s and 80s. I don't think the abuse the revolver indicates was done by the officer. He has been indisposed for some years, and died earlier this year. The gun and stocks literally stank when the gun was brought in. His no-account meth-head son sold the gun to the NAPA, and I bought it the next day. Also like the High Standard, the 19-3 is in excellent working order. I doubt if it was shot more than 200 rounds during its lifetime, excepting for yearly qualifying.

These are a couple of solid, ex LE guns, with a local history. I consider myself lucky to have found two working guns I can enjoy without fear of dinging them up.

I have less than $450 OTD in the pair.

Default High Standard Riot

My PD bought 10 of these in the late 1970's, great riot gun, smooth action. The only issue was if you looked down the barrel of some of them, you could see the barrel stampings on the inside of the barrel

If you tried hard enough you could trade those old things in on something with a light rail...

My High Standard is barrel marked "Flite King" followed in smaller letters with "Riot Model R*10" It has "BILOXI POLICE #9" engraved in 1/2" letters on the left side of the receiver so I've got a pretty good idea where it came from. It's in good shape mechanically even though it does have some honest wear from use. If it has a serial number, I can't find it.

As a young rookie back in the early 70's I paid $85.00 for one of these brand new. The department didn't issue shotguns back then but didn't care if you furnished your own. I used it for several years and then sold it to a fellow officer after I bought an Ithaca riot gun. I shoot long guns left-handed and liked the bottom ejection feature of the Ithaca. After I sold the HS it soon acquirred some history. The officer I sold it to shot a burglar off the roof of a gunstore about 2:00 a.m. with it. Don't ever point an unloaded gun at someone who is pointing a loaded one at you. The burglar was killed and two other guys up on the roof with him immediately surrendered. A few months later the HS was stolen out of a patrol car while the officer was away chasing someone down the street. About six months after the theft the gun turned up in an armed robbery in Moss Point, Ms. The perps were arrested and charged and the gun was returned a couple of years later after court and sentencing. The officer is retired now but he still has that shotgun. I saw him a while back and told him I'd like to buy "my shotgun" back, but he wouldn't sell it.

I was working security at a gun auction a couple of years ago when a department brought in 33 High Standard shotguns to sell. They were consecutive serial numbers. Only five or six guns appeared to have been used. The rest of them looked new as they had been well stored. The guns started high at over $200.00 but by the time they got to the end they had settled down to just over $100.00. One guy bought ten of the new looking guns with consecutive numbers for $1,100.00. The other guns were spread out to different bidders
