While doing some research in Georgia State Historical files I ran across an article in the OCONNE TIMES GAZETTE about the Senior Prom at the
OCONEE High School, the date was not legible but the story states that the prom was held after supper was provided for those attending and a photo of Mr. Lee Jarrett and his date Miss Elsie Mae Winterbottom was shown.
The article states that the photo was taken after desert was served, a prune and lemon compote hence the stoic expression. Mr. Jarrett was asked why he had the pitch fork and what brand it was and he replied" It was a post war transitional S&W and he and Miss Winterbottom would be going frog gigging after the prom.
The article further states there was an unfortunate incident where Miss Viola Smith, english teacher and chaperone had to be escorted from the dance after drinking to many cups of the punch. It seems some of the local boys spiked the punch with some local white lightening.
A later article asked the graduating seniors about plans after high school and Miss Winterbottom stated she was joining the French Foreign Legion as after her date with Mr. Jarrett she could do hand to hand combat with the best of them !!
Mr. Jarrett is frog gigging like snipe hunting here in the north ??
Inquiring minds want to know !!
