Default 686 SSR

I just bought a 686 SSR and noticed on the S&W websight that the trigger has an overtravel stop. Mine does not have one, the date on the fired case envelope in 10/2010, was there a change in design since mine was made. Thanks.

There must have been a design change, is my guess. My SSR doesn't have the overtravel stop, and I picked it up new in February. Gun had a spent casing dated November, 2010. Mind you, it could mean anything, as the grips on S&W's website on the pictures of the SSR are different from my SSR's wood grips, too, and I've never seen those grips on any SSRs in person. Maybe older models had that wood grip pattern, because the current SSRs do not.

I apologize if this post appears twice. The "reply to thread" option on this forum "locked up" as I was first responding.

Any way congratulations to EdinFL and WilliamG. I have never owned a revolver before. But, I was so impressed with the 686 SSR's trigger pull and accuracy, that I have adopted the model as my log-in ID.

The fired case with my SSR was dated December 2008. The trigger has an overtravel stop and the grips look just like the ones on the S&W website.

I too would be interested as to what the factory says about the model change. Thank you in advance.

I'm guessing then that S&W removed the overtravel stop and changed the grip patterns on the later models, then?

Mine looks exactly like the one attached to this post, except the grip is browner.

As I recall, there was a big to-do at the National Police Shooting Championships in 2009 about the 686SSR. I wasn't there but heard that the referees DQ'ed the SSR's that had the overtravel stop installed. Possibly S&W responded to this by leaving off the stop. Others who were there may weigh in with their opinions.

To add just a little more to this, my SSR was fired at the Factory on 02/13/09, has the Trigger Overtravel Stop, Wood Grips with a "greenish hue" and also came with an extra set of rubber grips. The extra grips were missing the escutcheon, but that was an easy fix.........

All SSRs come with Uncle Mike's rubber grips, too, though they're not very good, and actually hurt my hand where the grip meets the trigger guard. Very sharp. I swapped them out for some Hogues.

The over-travel limiter is a piece of a roll pin in a hole partially drilled through a forged trigger - not possible in a MIM part, as it is not solid. The 686 SSR still has both a forged hammer & trigger. Nothing to write home about anyhow! The original grips felt like they had sandpaper on the sides - they were 'rough' - probably great for keeping your grip where you put it. I like the slick JM-style grips - but that's a personal choice. Three years ago, I opted for the same-priced feature-loaded 627 Pro instead of the 686 SSR, but that's a personal choice. Also, the only competition I enter in locally is SPC - and they don't care about the round count.

Got a reply from S&W today:

Please call 1-800-331-0852 x2905 Customer Service to find out if your gun is supposed to have this trigger.

I guess I'll give them a call.

Just got off the phone with CS and was told they stopped useing the trigger with the overtravel stop about a year ago. They just haven't updated the website and catalog pics. Did manage to get a another set of SSR grips sent for free so I'm good.
