Welcome to the forum. Is there a letter prefix to that serial number, like a K? If you swing out the cylinder, do you see a stamped label like MOD 15? There may be a dash and number after that phrase, like MOD 15-3.

Don't be shy about posting pictures. There's a how-to thread over in the Forum Office section about how to use photo-sharing sites like Photobucket, or you can just upload attachments from your computer when you post a message to the forum. Look down below the message composition window for a button that says "Manage Attachments." That's where you pick and attach photos to a message.

All the other numbers other then the serial number on the butt are manufacturing process control numbers or inspection stampings. The only number that counts is the serial number on the butt with any letter prefix directly directly in front of the serial number. Like k1234Xx or N1234XX or S1234XX.

I think the reason people are confused is the S in front of the serial number isn't consistent with K frames which would have been made in 38 special. It Should have a K or no Letter directly in front of the serial number.

S856xxx is a real serial number, and it would have been used on a .38 Special Military & Police produced in late 1946 or early 1947. What's unusual is the report of adjustable sights. M&Ps with those serial numbers did not have adjustable sights, to my knowledge, and adjustable sights on any revolver usually were found on guns with 6" barrels (or 6.5" on the larger N-frame revolvers).

Pictures of this gun are becoming more important. You may have a postwar M&P that a gunsmith modified by adding target sights, or (your lucky day if this is true) the factory may have produced the gun in this configuration on a special order.

Or something else entirely may be going on that I don't understand.

.38 Special
S8569XX
4"
adjustable sights

It sounds like an early post-war (~1946) .38 Military & Police, which became the Model 10. That model usually has fixed sights, so factory original adjustable sights would be very interesting. Of course, a picture says a 1000 words.
