This will probably sound silly but I need something to aid me in reading text off the TV screen. I have cataracts so even well corrected glasses don't help much. The picture is usually adequate but the program guide, screen crawls etc are pretty tough. My 8x30 Pentax binocs work but the field of view is too narrow and the focus is barely adequate when set at minimum distance. I'm thinking a 4 to 6 power binoc would give a wider field and closer focusing ability.
Any such animal? Eight x is the minimum I saw on Amazon.
Any other suggestions other than a larger TV screen? Cataract surgery will have to wait until Medicare starts in about a year. Thanks.

I had my cataracts removed and artificial lenses implanted last year. For the first time in over 50 years, I am not wearing glasses.

I think you need opera glasses of 3X to 4X. These don't have prisms, and are cheaper than true binoculars.

I don't know who sells them; Searching Opera Glasses may find some.

I've looked at TV from a distance with binoculars, just to see what I'd see. Gave it up because I was afraid that it might damage my eyes. Sometimes, I turn a 'scope sight down to low power and shoot animals on TV nature shows.

Let us know how this works out. Can you still drive? Cataracts are a real bummer. I have them, enough to tell, but the doc said that it isn't bad enough yet to require surgery. He said that the average age for cataract surgery is 73, if that matters. I may need it before then. I'm still in my 60's.

I do carry a 6X Zeiss monocular in my jacket and use it to read the aisle signs in really large grocery stores. It's also useful at gun shows.

I'm not sure they make a set with a good enough filed of view at tv viewing distance. My Panasonic Tv will zoom if you have the buttom on your remote.

I think Texas star is right, opera glasses will do better than actual binoculars. I've seen them at one of the stores where I went for eyeglasses, and of course, in the gift counter at the symphony/ballet/opera halls. I also saw some, believe it or not, at a gun show a couple of months ago. Those were collectible, and the ones at the performance halls are pricey AND girly looking.

Check amazon.com or maybe even somewhere like Academy. I think bushnell makes an OK pair starting around $20. They go upward into the three digit price range from there.

Well, I wasn't suggesting the monocular for watching TV!

But if you have such vision problems, you may find one useful for the applications that I mentioned!

I suggested the opera glass for TV. Sorry: I thought I was being clear on the applications.

I was thinking that a monocular might be more conducive to eye strain. I didn't misunderstand your post at all. Thanks again for your suggestions. BTW, I just ordered a pair of opera glasses from Adorama, they're 3X and will focus to 6". Not too girly looking.
