Value of 547 9mm - overinflated?
on local gunsales ad I found a 547 4" w/box and papers - $850 FIRM - I know only a few made and I sold mine a few years back(wish I had it back - it was 3") - why is in my opinion too much for this weapon when it was a difficult task to keep those extractors clean? the recoil was not mild either - maybe I am just too old to reason this out

There where more 3 inch made than the 4 inch, plus I wouldn't sell my NIB 4 inch for less than $1000+ .

Bullseye is being modest, but then he'd just take it and make a work of art out of it!
$850 is a good deal these days for a 4"er. If I was able to buy one, I'd jump on it, without hesitation. Those 547s are pretty special, S&W seems to have no inclination to bring them back either, unfortunately. When circumstances are right for me, I'll snap up any that I find in 3" or 4". I have a 4" right now, that I will never part with. It has a pinned barrel, which doesn't make it better, just a little more unusual.

I would love to buy one at that price. My problem is convincing people to convert it to single action to ship it to California.

When they were available new, I was managing a gun store. They would linger in the case - no one was interested at all. I always thought they were kind of cool. But . . . well, I think they're now priced beyond what I'd pay for something that was kinda cool.

A friend sold me a 4" 547 for $230.00 about 15 years ago because he needed money to get his truck registered. I shot it and thought, "ehh." I then sold it for $235.00 at a gun show a couple weeks later. It had some bluing wear but didn't really have anything wrong with it. I should have sold my 4" Model 10. Part of my reasoning was that I would rather have had the round butt 3" 547 instead.

It all depends on what you mean by "value." If you want one because not many were made and it has collector appeal, then I guess it is valuable. As far as actual utility is concerned, a 9mm revolver that must be speedloaded and does not work with moonclips has little value to me. It's a personal thing.

My memory of the M-547 back when is the same as Erich's. The clipless extraction system was a marvel of engineering, the limit pin prevented case setback and these shot really well, but mostly got a 'ho-hum' in the gunshops. Why buy a 6 shot revolver when you could buy a 15 shot autoloader for the same cartridge? Most dealers had to discount them to sell them.
I bought the one I still have new in April, 1983, for $284.45, which included a 6% sales tax.
S&W had discontined their only .45 ACP revolver, the Model 25-2, about the time the M-547 was introduced. I was hoping that it was going to be replaced by a new variant that used the same extractor system as the -547, which I thought would have been preferable to using the pesky metal moon clips. I think that would have been cool, but S&W obviously didn't, as the -547 was the only revolver to use the little copper-beryllium fingers extractor system. No doubt the moon clip system is a lot cheaper and simpler.
I have read that S&W lost money on every 547 it made. I don't doubt that at all.
It's funny how some items are not really seen as desirable when they are eaisly available, but once the maker discontinues them for lack of sales, everybody has to have one!

Prices are determined by buyers and sellers, there's nothing else to hang 'em on.
I'd say $850 with box and papers is a real good price. I didn't find the extractors hard to clean but I did use a dry lubricant to avoid the propensity of fluid lubes to collect crud.
Here's my track on the 4-incher:
Smith & Wesson 547 4” SB Revolver in 9 mm. Bluebook of Gun Values (32nd Edition) indicates between $575 in 95% condition and $775 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 45 recorded prices for this model gun from $450 to $1299 over a period of 7 Yrs 3 Mos ending November 11, 2010. The average price as of that date was $694. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $317.
Here's how the data charts out. Notice that the Average Price Trend passed $900 over a year ago. Better examples would command higher prices. (The chart is a couple prices and three months behind the data.)
