Picked up a model 15...UPDATE got the letter!
Hi gents, just got this model 15 for $300, was this a good deal? It appears to be a 4 screw model, there is a screw on the frame in front of the trigger, what is this screw for? also according to the serial number it was manufactured in 1958, however when I swing out the cylinder , there is no model number on the crane or frame, it just has a few inspection stamps, the frame #, and a "D G" stamped on it. I thought in '58 they were already marking model #'s on the guns?

Very nice! The front screw was to retain the old-design trigger stop (I think that is the name of the part). The factory used up old stock even after reported design changes, so it is fairly common to see non-model stamped guns well after 1957. You got it at a very good price. Enjoy!

Great looking Model 15. I picked up one a couple of months ago. Still haven't shot it. I really like the way they look.

Saturday I was chronographing loads in four Smiths: M28-2, M15-2, M10-7, and M36. They all shoot just fine but the M15 just felt a little more "right" than the others. I have had it for over 40 years and it is a keeper in every regard.
If yours is anything like mine it will become a favorite. And I think you got a great deal at that price.

Very good price, Great gun.
I recently picked up a 5 screw Combat Masterpiece for $350 with wrong era wood S&W target grips.
As it is not model marked and a 4 screw I am guessing your serial is around K 330,000 ?
BTW correct grips for your gun would be diamond center Magnas with the flat bottom and soft shoulder at the top.
Dimaond combats would look real nice too.

serial no is K 322,2xx. The grips are pachmayr and they appear to be old, but look lightly used, bottom says "GRIPPER" and has a little slit window for the serial #, it also says "Los angeles, calif" when did pachmayr make grips in los angeles? I love the feel of this pachmayr grip but will put the wood grips on when they arrive

Very nice looking gun! I consider the 15 one of the classic revolvers made by S&W and a wonderful gun to shoot. As to the model number stamping it may vary as the dates are not written in stone. I posted on another thread a model 36 Target that was shipped in 1961 but is not model marked, my theory is that the 36 Target was not a quick seller and sat in the vault at S&W for a while.
