Default S series M57 question

I have a friend who recently purchased a M57 and then looked it up in blue book and found that the S serial numbered guns are worth more than the N. Could someone please explain why this would more than double the value of a gun?

As well, since I have looked at my 57's and found no "S", but I do have a M58 that is blessed with this serial number appendage. Is this value also effected similarly?

Thanks for any help.

Fred

The "S" prefix was used on N frames postwar until 1969, when they changed to the "N" prefix. It signified the internal hammer block safety. The change in serial number was made to comply with requirements of the Federal Gun Control Act of 1968.

Collectors typically like earlier guns and will pay a premium, but the big increase in value is because of the stocks. From its introduction in 1964 until about 1967, the Model 57 came with special diamond target stocks that collectors call "Cokes". They were unique to this model and the .44 Magnum (29's) and can bring close to $400 in excellent condition. Late "S" prefix guns shipped without Cokes won't bring a huge premium over an "N" prefix gun.

The Model 58 came with PC Magna stocks. Early versions (a majority of the "S" prefix guns) had un-checkered diamonds around the grip screw escutcheons which will bring a premium, but nowhere near as much as Cokes.
