JC asking 500 S&W question?
Hello fellow enthusiasts, My First Post.
Any good 500 loads with, 405 cast, SR4759, Accurate No 5, Unique, IMR 4831SC, or Retumbo, just listing powders on hand, or any other suggestions? NEF Handi Rifle 22" barrel?

500 loads
Hi,
I have not tried any of powders listed in either my 4" 500 or my handi rifle.
That being said, of what you have listed, the SR4759 is the only one that seems right for your application to me.
I believe I have seen that powder listed for a 500 mag.
I have used it for reduced loads in my 416 Rigby and I also think in my 45/70. That is what makes me think it might work well for a 500 mag in a rifle.
The number 5 is too fast and I have never seen loads for it or any of the other powders that I can remember.

Lyman #49 has UNIQUE for Reduced loads in 500 S&W.
Also look at Reloading 500 S&W Magnum Page but mostly other powders.
Seriously why even take a risk? Use the standard pistol loads in your rifle especially with a rifle where you dont have to worry about recoil. H110 and Lil'Gun is all you would probably need.

There is a guy named John Ross and he advocates using IMR/Hodgdon rifle powders for the 500. I've tried 4895 and Varget and they work. Velocity was not very high as predicted, 900 fps of so with 4895 although I have not worked up my loads yet. her is link to his page and some data.
.500 S&W Loading Data
good luck, Dan

SR4759 would be the only one you listed which would do well for full house loads.

Load the 500 with 4759 at 100% loading density and any bullet and you will get a powerful load that is nowhere near maximum. Great powder in the .500.

Is this tested and safe ... Even for midsize jacketed lead 325-350 gr?
Actually, I am also interested in trying out the military surplus stuffs (WC680, etc) you suggested in your PDF article about sw500pc gun but, again, the military powders do not have a lot of easily accessible load data published.
I don't seem to be able to find much published data at the Hodgdon loading data site either about 4759 being used for the sw500 magnum revolvers even though they did mention it in their catalog.
If u have links, please share. Thanks!

Some powders may be quite suited for a particular caliber yet not be promoted or tested by the powder company for that particular caliber. In most situations I would say proceed with caution.
In this case however, if John Ross who was integral in the original development and testing of the 500 S&W cartridge several years ago says it's a great and safe powder for the 500, I wouldn't hesitate.
From my experience, IMR4227 performs great in the 500 also. I only shoot hard cast gas check bullets in my only 500 which is a Handi-Rifle.

Thank you for your response. Yes, I intend to start off with the slower-burning types. IMR 4277 and Accurate #9 are a couple of them. I have the first pound of Ramshot Enforcer enroute.
BTW, how much crimping are you guys using to prevent recoil-induced and/or primer-induced crimp jumping?

S&W 500 Load with SR4759
Hi, this is my first post on the site. Wanted to pass on some info on loading the S&W 500 with SR4759. I'm shooting a H&R handi rifle using 36.5 grs. of the 4759. Using Starline brass made for the LR primers. Primers used were Winchester, bullets used were Sierra 350gr HP. Crimp bullet.Showed 1,800fps+ on my ProCrono. No excess pressure signs. Three shot group at 50yds you could cover with a quarter. Should be good medicine for anything in the PA. woods. Looking forward to reading other reports on this fine caliber.

Has anyone ever tried the old RL 11 powder in the 500 S&W? I've read John Ross's loading page for the 500 and since I have about 4 lbs of RL 11 and it sits between H-335 and Varget on the burn rate chart I thought it may work
