Default Carrying in the car

Carrying in the car I usually have a revolver in the center console. Sometimes stuff gets left on top of it and opening the console is a bit of a delay in getting to it in case needed in a hurry. I'm wondering how others carry in the car. I have a CCW permit but rule out pocket carry, the seat belt makes it difficult for me to get to it fast. I know that from cell phone calls missed.
I've thought about some sort of holster or way to strap it under the seat or dash board. I don't want to carry it out in the open where it could fly around, or out, in a sudden stop or accident either.
I live on a dangerous curve in the road 2 or 3 a year cars run into the ditch or yard sometimes flipping over, It is amazing the stuff that flies out, tons of beer cans (empty) toys, CDs, a heavy chain, even a boxed engagement and wedding band. No guns yet.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or experiences.

I took a cheap holster from walmart that uses velcro instead of a regular belt loop, it'll hold several different models of my semi's. Took an old rear-center seat belt out of a car we were junking, you could grab one at about any junkyard cheap. Welded the metal ends together, but you could bolt it as well I suppose. Made a small hole at the bottom of the cheapy holster to run a zip tie through, fasten the velcro and the zip tie to the belt and run the belt around the drivers seat front to back with the buckle at the rear, slid through the crack at the bottom of the seat back. Adjust it to size, and position the holster where it rides neatly at the bottom of the front of the seat. You can easily reach between your legs to access it, if you keep your legs closed no one can see it if they are talking to you through the window (driveup windows at McD's and the bank) and it's easily removed if the wife doesn't like sitting on the belt while driving.

Sportsmans Guide sells a magnet that you screw to inside of a desk drawer, and then you stick your gun to the bottom of the drawer. Maybe that would work attached to the inside of your console, and the gun stuck to the outside?

My suggestion -- Don't put stuff on the console.

This was one of the reasons why crossdraw holsters became so popular. Being a bigger guy, I learned alot of times that if I had to draw from my right hip the seatbelt would get in the way or even the console itself, so I tended to put my gun in the center console where I can get to it easier. With my old truck with its full length bench seat, this becomes less of an issue (and no center console). I don't want anything under my dash or hooked anywhere because I would be afraid of it coming loose. This maybe a solution that needs an inventor to solve the problem.

The Safepacker holster from The Wilderness in Phoenix may solve this problem --- its "belt loop" can be fastened around wide and thick things, such as a padded pack hipband, or, a seatbelt. Keeps the gun clean, secure, and obscured if not hidden from view. Check their website for video illlustrastions of this versatile carry option: thewilderness.com

I drive a car with bucket seats and a center console. The back of the passenger's seat has a large pocket that is easily accessed from the driver's seat. I just drop the sidearm in that pocket. It disappears completely, it isn't rolling around with a bunch of other junk, and I can access it without taking my eyes off whatever is in front of me by just reaching over and sticking my hand in the pocket. At least in that car, it works well for me.

Default Carrying in the car

Here's how they used to do it-a Heiser automobile holster
that fastened to the steering column. Sorry it's not a Smith.

It also depends on what your State Laws are for carrying in the car. In Florida a CCW has nothing to do with carrying in the car.

With or without a CCW the firearm must be securely encased. A glove box or center console is legal. A gun in a holster on the seat/under the seat will cause problems. You can argue that the top strap of the holster is "securing it" but the LEO who stops you may not go for that. I have no idea if the pictured holster would be legal here in Fl, maybe other States.

I am an old man and I have never saw that one of those before. Reminds me of a saddle scabboard. Thanks. Larry

That steering column holster is sooooo cool. Have added it to my holster scrapbook. Want to sell it?

I keep a S&W 649 in the car console. If I go to the big city, I strap on my (sorry) Colt Detective Special. And, yes, I have a carry permit. So does my wife.

My car (a Toyota RAV4) has a pocket in each of the front doors. I carry a revolver in the driver's side door pocket in a cheap holster which is contained in a cloth cover that my wife stitched together. The cover is about the same color as the door upholstery. So, unless you look really close, the gun is nearly invisible if looking through a window. To draw the gun I just have to pick up the whole assembly with my left hand and pull the revolver out with my right.

#17 “Securely encased” means in a glove compartment, whether or not locked; snapped in a holster; in a gun case, whether or not locked; in a zippered gun case; or in a closed box or container which requires a lid or cover to be opened for access.

That holster would be perfectly legal. Holster laying on the seat is perfectly legal, as long as the snap is on.

I usually carry a gun in the center console of my SUV (Expedition) as well. Here is an option I have been considering:

Universal Vehicle Handgun Holster Mount - Steering Wheel Column Application

In Texas, you can carry a gun in your car legally, but it must be concealed. I figure that the Expedition rides high enough that no other motorists would see it in a steering column holster (except maybe an 18-wheeler driver.) Of course, when you get out of the car, you'd have to put it in the console or somewhere out of sight...and I have been considering getting a gun safe that fits in the console.

I can reach the pouch on the passenger seat back, but for some reason I don't care for the idea of having a gun behind me like that. I figure that if I keep the doors locked, which we do (they lock automatically) then I'd have enough time to get the gun from the console in case of need.

Yes, the statute is what you quoted, but that is why I also stated the LEO who stops you may or may not know that and they will instantly be be at a raised "threat" level.

If you get pulled over for a minor violation and he or she sees the gun "snapped in a holster" on your seat what reaction do you expect??

I would expect him to do his job. Which means write me a ticket if I committed a moving violation, and then let me go on my merry way. A perfectly legal gun carried in a perfectly legal manner should NOT freak the cop. I would not expect him to take my gun "for everyone's safety". I would not expect him to unload my gun. I would not expect him to run the serial number to see if it's stolen. I would expect him to do what he stopped me for.

In Missouri, since they allowed CCW permits, it is legal to have a loaded handgun anywhere in your vehicle or on your person, concealed or not without a CCW permit as long as you are in your vehicle that is. So now, the more I think there is the chance of a threat, the closer the weapon becomes. Most of the time it is in the glove box, but in the city I like to have it in the middle of the seat stuck down in the little slot that the center seat belt comes up from.(M37 snub) (S-10 bench seat).
That steering column holster is nice but my column is about 10" in diameter.
Peace,
gordon

One of the ways i carry in the console. Rides in the lid of the console so nothing is on top of it. A cheap IWB holster clips to a tissue holder that's part of the lid. Doesn't work with a snubby as it will slide out of the holster (unless you have a strap on the holster). Most of the time I'll carry cross draw if I'm going to be in the car for a while.

Seems he would not know if it was a perfectly legal gun unless he
" Ran" the serial number.. but to do that he would have take take the gun for everyones safety.. now wouldn't he.. ??
And after he was done and verified all was legal... he would then probably then write you a ticket and let you go on your merry way.
I'm jus' sayin..

BTW.. I like your signature... I would think you would expect the LEO to do the same

Most important thing is not to keep your gun in the same place as your weed. Gun in the center console-weed in the glove compartment. And when the LEO asks if he can search the car, the correct answer is NO!

What have I done to make him suspect that the gun is not legal? Just the fact that it is THERE means he needs to take it and run it? Should he also take my Rolex and run the SN on it? How about my Nikon SLR? My laptop? Anything else of value that's lying in plain sight in the car? Where should he stop? If he has the right to run my gun, then he also has the right to run my Rolex, Nikon or laptop. And since I don't think anyone would agree that he has the right to run my camera, watch or computer, why would you think he has the right to run my gun?

BTW.. If he's worried about the gun, all he has to do is ask me to step out of the truck. Then I can't grab it and shoot him.

In Alabama you can CC in the vehicle if you have a CWP. I have a blackhawk serpa holster screwed to the dash under the steering wheel of my truck. My gun is there if not laying in the center tray of my dash in the open. If you are pulled over here, you must give your permit to the officer with your drivers license and advise him of the weapon. This is to keep him from sticking his service weapon in your face if he see's it. Keeps you from being shot!!!!!!!!

Better to be up front and then let go on your merry way.

You know... I just have never heard of anyond getting killed by a rolex, although my wife was a tad annoyed when I bought my Datejust.... and I supose my Nikon D90 could be used as a club,,

But I have heard of an LEO getting shot by a CCW holder who had gone bad and and it had not caught up to him..

I doubt if we will come to an agreement about this situation.. but...that's what make the world go round..

This, we assume, is advice borne of professional, rather than personal experience. The correct answer is "NO! --- unless you have a search warrant, which you can't possibly have obtained in these few minutes, and cannot produce, and therefore do not have --- so, unless I'm under arrest, for which you have no plausible grounds or probable cause, because of which I'm therefore, not under arrest, I'll be leaving now...

Though certainly not "custodial arrests," traffic stops are "arrests" and one cannot leave until the nice police officer advises it's cool to do so.

For the record, search away, if so inclined, in my ride. Nothing ever there that is illegal or contraband...lest the LEO somehow figure out which cigar is the re-banded Cuban.

Be safe.

I keep a charter arms SS .44 in my console of my truck all the time. Its positioned to get to quickly and I dont pile things on top of it to slow things up if needed in a hurry. I keep it in a in the pocket holster (Uncle Mikes) so when I leave the truck and want to carry it with me, I just slip it in my front pocket.

I carry IWB appendix, and when I get in the car I just adjust the holster so I can draw the gun. I don't have a gut yet though, so that may help me in this case.

So, unless you look really close, the gun is nearly invisible if looking through a window. To draw the gun I just have to pick up the whole assembly with my left hand and pull the revolver out with my right.
Generally I don't like to comment on someone's preferred method of carrying. However, I'd just like to point out two things to consider:

First you mentioned that drawing the gun requires two hands. Second, imagine this scenario: You get into your car some night and close the door. Before the key is in the ignition and the doors are locked, some meth head comes and open your driver's side door. Your gun is now 3 feet away and some druggie is standing between it and you.

OWB at about 4:00 is my normal carry and it works well in the car because I'm not sitting on it and can still get to it with the seat belt on by just leaning slightly forward.

That wouldn't be the Crossman Airsoft Holster would it?
Its a bit of a shared secret here. For about $7 it makes a GREAT utility/range holster. Fits my 4516 perfectly.

Very nice tip, I might try that.

If I had a vintage automobile (Model T truck?) I would certainly have that rig slung under the wheel. I never heard of that model before, but it is super cool!

Shooting at the guy who hit you does not count as exchanging information here in Texas.

Always!! I can't believe the number of people I see on the highway with the entire contents of their car and trunk on the shoulder of the road while the police go through it bit by bit. Like Nancy Reagan said, "Just say no!"

I'm lucky. My Mercury has pockets on the front of the front seats. I was wondering what they were for.

I've been thinking about this thread and the issues raised by the OP and others. I've struggled with the same "how do I carry in the vehicle" question. I had an idea to build a rectangular leather pouch about an inch or so thick, with a flap and button closure that could be mounted in the middle front of the front seat via a nylon belt, which I would also have to hand make. A fairly large rectangular pouch could accommodate both revolvers and autos and could be used for either left or right handed draw. I may still look into this, but then early this morning it dawned on me (no pun intended) that a large fanny pack could serve the same purpose. It just wouldn't be as cool. I think I'll get out the leather tools and see what kind of Frankenstein rig I can come up with.

OP said he has a CCW permit. If dress permits, shoulder holster may be best. Otherwise, ankle holster - Renegade.

Usually it rides in my center console-I can get it fairly quickly if need be. If I feel the need to go Orange, I will take it out and have it snug between the drivers seat and the center console. It has just enough tension to keep it right there and is a smooth draw. Most of my driving is highway. For informational purposes-anywhere in New Orleans is Condition Orange.

For years I have carried my "truck gun," a Charter Undercover from the early 70s, in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster velcro'd to the driver's side of my console. It sits up, never moves, and is real available if I should need it. I've never had a vehicle that this would not work in.

I add a drop of superglue to the velcro that attaches to the console as it gets so hot here in Florida that, otherwise, the velcro falls off. When I sell the vehicle, a little fingernail polish remover makes the superglue residue disappear.

I have a knife, extra ammo and a flashlight also velcro'd in the console, too. Still leaves plenty of room in the center for all the console stuff one carries there.
