Default Need some input and possible pricing for S&W 586

How much are 4" 586s going for these days? I ask because I've recently decided to trade off my 627 PC for cheaper guns (rather have 2 vs 1) and someone offered me his 586 4" +$400 for my 627. Fair offer?

On a side note.. someone also offered a almost new Security Six +$500 for my 627.

My wife would kill me if I traded her 586 for ANYTHING, except maybe another old Python (hers is a 1968 model, doubt she'd go for anything later than that).
Her 586 no dash is as smooth as any Python. We paid $500 for the 586 a few years back, that's a good price today.
I guess 586 with $400 to boot is a great deal for any Smith with a hole in the side. You'd have the 586 - one of the best revolvers made - and $400 to put toward, say, a Model 28-2, or even a decent .22.

I paid $550 for a really nice 586-2 about eight or nine months ago. It had not been returned for the recall and the "M" stamp, so I took care of that. S&W were real nice, paid for everything.

Just as an update, the one being offered is a 586 no dash.

Two months ago I bought a 586 no dash at auction for $400.00, it was in great shape except it needed to have the side plate removed so a real cleaning and lube could be preformed. I shoots really well. It does not have the snap of my M-19 with .357 Magnum loads. I like it so much it may soon replace my beloved M-19 as my nightstand revolver.

If you want an 586 it sounds to me like you have a valid trade offer.

What are the different variances with the 586 and what did each add/subtract? I vaguely remember a recall on some of them.

Those 586's are seldom seen locally and when they do appear always seem to bring $550 +.

Great revolver. Regards 18DAI.

If you're tired of your 627, take the 586 and the cash if the gun is in the kind of condition you expect. I have a couple original 586s and have had zero problems with them, but I wouldn't mind finding a nice -3 gun some day, anyway. I would pass on the Ruger offer.

IIRC, the -1 ECO was for the radius-ed studs, the -2 was the hammer nose fix, and the -3 was the new yoke screw. (This may be over-simplified.) I consider all those worthwhile fixes, but beyond that, I lost interest and didn't keep up. I think mainly we are talking about new- & old-type sights, and round- or square-butt frames. Not sure where the floating hand came along, but though many people grouse about them, I have never had a problem with a gun that had one - at least that I could detect.

So if I were to get a no dash... does it mean I'll have to get these things fixed?

The "M" mod addressed an issue of soft primer flowback on one certain brand of ammo way back when these were carried by LEO and a stoppage could make the difference of life or death.

I have two no dash 586's , One has the "M" but I have never had a problem with either gun.

While S&W reportedly will do the mod for free my personal opinion is it doesnt need to be done and I wouldnt lose sleep over it.
...thats my "Opinion".

If you shoot the gun and carry it daily and it bothers you do the mod....its free after all.

PS...I value clean original 586 / 686 4" guns between $400 and $500 depending on how clean and original they are...Thats me.

Good luck .

The only thing that can be fixed (within reason) is the hammer nose and bushing, which is a +/- type of thing. I have never seen a 586 seize from the problem, but then neither have I seen a 66 lock-up. I do not doubt that both things did happen.

I wouldn't bother with it if the gun wasn't causing trouble.

Default 586 (M)

I bought this 586 (M) 6" for $530 OTD last year and it has been worth every penny. It is a real sweetheart. It is pictured below the post war/pre 17. I thought about selling it once but changed my mind.

Someone else might possibly offer me a 586 7 shot. Are the 7 shot ones more worth my while than the no dash?

These pics def got me wanting one. Damn you guys.

Take a look at the ratchet cuts on the extractor of the 7-shot revolver and then compare them to the extractor of the six-shot revolver. That may help you decide which one you prefer.

I would not trade a Smith for any Ruger! But that's just me. I think the L frames are great guns, but I will always take an N frame over an L frame. But that's just me!

I paid $499 for this 586-4 and considered it a good deal. Not a mark on it when I bought it, and just a cylinder turn line from a few hundred rounds now. Great gun, the underlug makes it a bear to carry compared to a Model 19, but really keeps the gun on target when firing fast double action.

I bought my S&W 586 L-Frame 4" and 6"(No dash) new in 1981 & 1982.
I never sent them in for the "M' modification, nor have I ever had any issues with my two 586 L-Frames.
Great shooters.
