I miss Paul Newman....
My 3 year old has been constantly watching "Cars" and Mr. Newman played the old racing legend, Hudson Hornet. I've been hearing his voice over and over and it just reminds him how much I enjoyed his work and how generous a man he was. Think I'll rent "cool Hand Luke" this week.

If you look up generous in the dictionary you'll find that drawing of Paul Newman we see in the grocery store on bottles of salad dressing, salsa, etc.. A great actor who said of himself in The Silver Chalice, "To have survived the worst movie of the 50's is no mean feat." Well, he's done a lot to make up for that. My favorite? Absence Of Malice and Butch Cassidy.

BTW, if you get a chance to see the original "Cars" it is quite a good movie....the story of a town bypassed on route 66 by route 40 is quite touching...lots of nostalgia...perfect for the group on this forum...

They give a brief moment to the Hudson Hornet in Cars 2 at the beginning. The moment in the movie suggests he has passed on in the "Cars" world as well. Was very nice to see.

I watched it today.
It may have had the finest cast of actors I can remember seeing.
Some great qoutes. My favorite car washing scene, fight, and line (Strother Martin) from a film. Just a fine movie all together.

Cars has been my 5 year old son's favorite movie, as well, very nice film. Took him to see Cars 2 a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't like it as much as the first one. The original Cars movie was a light hearted love story, with some morals lessons, and as Sip mentioned, a good dose of nostalgia. Cars 2 was OK, but had a pretty violent/mature tone for a kids movie. You'd have to see it to understand, but I was disappointed that they went in that direction... That being said, my son loved it...!
As for Paul Newman, I miss him, too. Great actor, cool guy, and down to earth person, for all the fame he achieved. My sister lived in Westport, CT for a number of years, and would run across him and/or his wife, Joanne Woodward from time to time around town. They were always very gratious, and would come up to her to make of my nephews (cute kids, at the time...). He was a guys guy, liked sports, drank beer, drove fast cars, generous, and was good to his wife and friends, I liked him...

Another great movie with Mr. Newman is "The Road to Perdition", with Tom Hanks. Unusual roles for both actors.

I met Mr. Newman on the set of "Fort Apache, the Bronx." It was the first movie I ever worked on...had a bit part as a gang member....he was gracious to everyone...even all us "extras."

Fort Apache the Bronx was a great movie. The community was up in arms against it, but reality was 10x as bad as the movie. The people always attacked the precinct. That was a very realistic NYPD movie.

Simpson St, the original four-one
when I was going to Monroe HS we used to take the 27 bus down to Southern Blvd and Westchester Ave and walk the boulevard.

But don't forget he is a supporter of Mumia Abu-Jamal who was convicted of the December 9th 1981 murder of Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel J. Faulkner. And some of the money from the sales of his products went to Abu-Jamal's defense.

Very true, I never buy his products, Ben & Jerry's ice cream was another supporter.

When he was alive, the gun magazines regularly commented on his support of anti gun causes and he was sometimes quoted in the media with quips favoring strict gun control. Just saying.
I had my eldest son watching Full Metal Jacket all the time when he was three and his brother was two. I attribute this to the reason that Brody yells "Kill, kill, kill" when he stomps ants and why Liam smiles whenever he sees an M14... For a while if you asked them "What makes the grass grow" they'd yell "Blood, blood, blood!" Now that's some fine parenting. Solemn nod.
Anyway... Paul Newman did give the world some fine salad dressing and popcorn. He also seems to have genuinely tried to give back to the community and not let success go to his head.

His support of anti-gun causes soured me on him. I believe he was one of the all-time worst actors about that. Michael Douglas is another, although Newman was a better actor. Others have already mentioned his support for a cop killer and probably for other liberal causes.
I think he also owned a winery. I'd never buy his products.

I didn't care for his politics, but he seemed (at least to me) to not be a hypocrite about it as a lot of them are.
Definitely a fine actor without a doubt; and it was obvious he had strong convictions about giving back of what he had been blessed with since he had been so successful.
I'm glad I'm not in the public eye where every statement and foible is analyzed to death and folks who don't know me get to decide what kind of person I was. But that's the curse of being famous and part of the bargain.
Paul Newman was responsible for Paul Newman. I am responsible for me. I liked most of his movies and enjoyed him on that basis. Whatever he made of his soul based on personal and political convictions has already seen completion with his passing. I doubt most of us who were honest would maintain we always get it all right ourselves.
Whatever he was, he made his mark and left behind a legacy of work and charitable contribution that outlasted him.

My local cause is Camp Boggy Creek, a Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. Paul Newman's products funded a large part of this camp and his inspiration and guidance are already sorely missed. Don't come here expecting any quarter when it comes to Newman and the good he did in his lifetime.
For those that have 5 minutes, take a listen and then come look around and see for yourself what good a good man can do in this world.

My dad worked as a Sgt. there...he also ran Orchard Beach as a Lt. for 5 years...that was known as F-Troop because of all the screw ups that wound up there very summer.
I actually found a pic on the web of the riot scene I was in...I'm somewhere back there in a red hoodie...I wore that so I would be able to spot myself in the movie...
