66 no dash
A buddy has a 4" pinned/recessed with stainless rear site that he got from his uncle , a retired Ohio State Trooper. It has a seven didget # on left side of the frame under the cylinder. Not marked any other way.?95%?
My question is, how bad will that hurt the price ? He's thinking of selling it, and I dont know if 600 is to much to ask.
thanks
PHILLIP

I rarely see police markings devalue guns unless they are just terrible looking like if done by an etching pencil or something else hideous for metal marking. I would pay $600 for one if great condition, but if the forcing cone shows wear, it has a bunch of flame cutting, and recoil shield shows heavy magnum use then it could be passed over unless the price went way down. I assume proper timing and still being tight.

Sounds like the L.E. agency marked the gun with their own number - not unusual. I'd say it's not a positive as far as value goes, would be at least a slight minus to the purist collector. $600 is probably a little steep for a no-dash 66 unless it was prisitine, all original, with box and stuff, but then it's kind of a reigonal thing when it comes to value. If I were interested in the gun, I'd be thinking more in the $450 to $500 range, but that's just me. It's worth what somebody will pay for it.

Just to be clear... Are you talking about the number that is on the frame under the crane (the part you swing out to load/unload)? Or is there another number under the cylinder that is separate from, and different than, the serial number.
If you are describing the former, that is the guns serial number. It should start with a number, then the letter 'K' then a five digit number.
If the latter then I have no idea what it is. Some folks collect department marked guns and attach a premium to the markings.
I don't, so to me it is defacing the piece and tends to reduce the value. $600 is too much for a 66, even here in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia.
I have a M66 no dash and it is one of my favorites.

2 years ago I bought a Model 66 no dash with all the goodies and box for $550 so I think $600 is to high also. I also don't collect guns with police markings so that would be a - in price for me.
