Sorry, cannot go to school next week because Inservice Orientation killed me. Kids are going to have to deal with Corpse Teacher.

Also, tasers have the electrodes and firearms are expressly forbidden...so what do you self defense gurus recommend to have on campus? I'm tired of being unprotected where sometimes I feel most vulnerable.

You're a teacher? I thought Captain Torque Wrench meant you were a mechanic of some sort...or that maybe you just like busting nuts.

yes, I am a music teacher. In Texas, it's an EC-12 music certification whch means you can teach anything music related at any grade level. I prefer junior high and high school band but I also work with adult choirs.

captain torque wrench is an old nickname. In one week, i stripped out the shower faucet, the kitchen faucet, and both oil plugs on my mustang. It's hard to open a jar after I close it...so, my hubby's friend stared calling me Captain Torque Wrench and it stuck.

Hahaha, mechanic. I CAN do what I need, and have fun in the garage (or used to) but don't do much turning of the wrenches lately.

As far as busting...only when necessary.

back to what I can carry...there are stun type guns, no electrode wires, yes? Something that is legal to have on campus. I really need to know. Not for myself but also for the high school daughters who will be getting to school by themselves more often and will be doing to and from home after the band bus or ROTC bus gets them back to school after games and other events at night.

recommendations?

Only if I also plop them in a sock or pillow case with a bar of soap and have the offender held down under a blanket.

how about an expanding baton or one of those tactical pens. Can always keep a squirt bottle of ammonia for cleaning windows, desks and instruments.

You sound like a very self-confidant Woman. I don't think you have anything to worry about. A fierce stare that says "You really don't wanna mess with me, buddy" will do wonders.

That and a t-shirt that says "PMS Patrol". THAT will scare ANY guy!!!

hmmm i don't know about ammonia. certain chemicals are verboten...BUT that suggestion does make me think of the things I already have to use that may be effective for self defense. Like mouthpiece sanitizer. That stuff is rank. Some kind of mentholated alcohol.

what's stupid is we can have nail polish remover in the rooms, but not acetone. Just depends on the container! I can use pro strength nail polish remover to clean transparencies etc but cannot go get acetone from the auto parts store. There is no difference except package and price, and one is allowed and one is not without a serious stack of paperwork.

Oh...and PMS patrol? HAHAHAHA! I still would feel better about knowing what's best to give my teen daughters.

wrench,

Yes, there are stun guns which don't fire electrode wires, but that means that one has to make contact with the attacker -not real desireable. He could knock it out of your hand, or grab your wrist and keep the stun gun away from him -you get the idea.

I'm not a 'guru', but I know of only one self-defense product other than a firearm with which you can defend yourself remotely -pepper spray(or "OC", as it's called). Will the school permit you to carry that?

Andy

P.S. I, too, am a recovering(or perhaps incurable?) overtorquer. I own four different torque wrenches and must use them faithfully when I do my automotive work lest I damage every fastener I touch. As the saying goes, "Been there, done that."

P.P.S. I see I'm behind the game again with this post. Check out the link posted above for OC products.

There is a type of stun gun that doesn't require contact with the attacker. it's called an "air taser" does anyone know about these? I'd like to know about what you guys recommend instead of what the guys trying to sell me one at a gun show say about them.

And yes, pepper sprays are permissable to carry. There is one that the Mr saw that has a really really long range, and he can't remember what it was.

I don't know if it would be allowed, and I don't have personal experience, but I have read that a faceful of wasp and hornet killer sprays are quite effective at discouraging people and I believe that they also have some range!

Pepper spray with a fluorescent yellow (or other bright color) dye.
Shoes for running away in after the pepper spray. High heels might look cool but aren't the best for getting out of a dangerous situation.

Self defense course(s).
A thumb or finger stuck as far as it will go into someone's eye WILL give one a bit of time to get away. Or is that not PC?

No matter the weapon - Training and KNOWING how to use it effectively is absolutely necessary. Otherwise you may be providing the BadGuy with another tool to use against you.

There's an NRA course --- "Refuse To Be A Victim" --- which is likely worthwhile for you and your daughters. Any of the "pepper spray" devices are way better than nothing. I'm dubious about the "tactical" pens --- I own and carry one, but it isn't the first tool/weapon of choice, and it's probably of minimal efficacy in unskilled hands. I think that a keen sense of "situational awareness" and a "Condition Yellow" mindset are probably as important as marginally effective substitutes for lethal or incapacitating weapons. Your situation is a real conundrum, but at the least, you're thinking about it.

I'm always talking to them about being aware of what's going on around them, not looking down at texting or careful about who and what is around them in parking lots, have your keys ready before you go from building to car, with one jabbed out from your fist ready for a jab.

It's sad that I have to do this, and it's not like I'm paranoid everything is out to get you kind of thing, but you just never know. If nothing else I work with them on not looking like a victim or easy target. but I want them to have something extra and know how to use it, and to use it without hesitation if the time comes.

And a little extra protection for myself can never hurt (at least not me) either.

A #2 hard lead pencil sharpened, to the adams apple or eye ball will deter the most determined attacker (this according to ex FBI agent G. Gordon Liddy of Watergate fame). One of the new aluminum sd pens would probably work just as well. Kimber makes a pepper gel delivered at 90 mph that looks like a squirt gun and has 2 shots. I bought my daughter one of these. About 29 bucks on sale. I doubt one would be allowed on school property as it does look kinda like a gun. You could always get the spray designed for bear attacks, I believe the volumn is greater and shoots further. This is in a round aersol can.

A kubaton is a force multiplier that is handheld and requires a little training to be effective and another device that looks innocent enough is a Stinger by Comtech. Dillon Precision sells these. Most folks wouldn't recognize that either one of these two items are serious weapons when properly deployed.

There are tazer's that are smaller than the one's cops use that are designed for citizen use. Uses a compressed air cartridge to deliver(propel) the barb. A barb is attached to a long wire (15 feet) that shoots out from the device and imbeds in the targets skin and sends voltage that will temporarily disable an attacker. These air tazers can be kinda expensive, several hundred dollars.

I think it's Cold Steel that makes a hair brush that looks like a blow dry round brush with a removable handle that hides a tough polymer dagger blade up in the brush part. I think it will penetrate a 1/2" thick piece of plywood. I would think one of these would be most excellant for a female.

It's a damn shame these type conversations have to take place. If the damn courts would put criminals in jail and let them damn near starve and work their tails off for a few years there would be a deterient effect to punishment. At least you live in the GREAT State of Texas which is not shy about firing up ole' sparky or the legal needle when justified. Stay safe.

what bothers me not only do these conversations have to take place but that it's also about not feeling safe on a suburban school campus.

I remember school was one of the safest places to be. Now...sadly, no. Not for students, not for teachers.

Nighty night, gents. we'll see what tomorrow holds.

+1

Costs about $30 on-line and about the size of a regular flashlight. Effective to approximately 20 ft. Made of 'ultra hot pepper spray'.

"Condition Yellow" awareness ALWAYS at least, Tactical Pens and such require you to be within arms reach (not good), Pepper Sprays you need to Google and study up on. Different strengths, different streams and length of streams along with different reactions to the wind along with stickiness and identification dyes.

Whistles, compressed air horns, knives of legal length, Old-Time LONG hat pins in your purse, hand to hand self defense courses, rolled up magazine to poke someone in the throat if needed, bar of soap or roll of quarters in a sock to sling (the old lock in a sock deal), Tactical Flashlights are extremely bright and can blind the attacker while giving you time to RUN and ESCAPE.

If you have a car, you can equip it with an UNLOCKED, "The Club" on the steering wheel for quick removal. the halves of the unit make serious LEGAL weapons to defend yourself with.

You might keep a Ball Peen hammer in your car as it's not considered a concealed weapon as proven many times by the Hell's Angels. It's a favorite weapon of theirs.

Shoes that will enable you to RUN if required.

Don't forget to SCREAM AS LOUD AS YOU CAN.

After the shootings and a decapitation at VA Tech, I'm of the opinion that I wouldn't dare be teacher in any school without carrying a big gun.

Maybe a SAW, FN's Minimi, Ma Deuce, Big Bertha....

Schools are dangerous!

Another tactic that MIGHT work:
The FIRST time that ANYONE is injured by an attacker on the school grounds - EVERYONE that attends the school, student or staff, should file a lawsuit against the school board for emotional distress and lack of protection.

If they won't let you protect yourself then someone sure as **** should be responsible for same. With responsibility comes liability!

Electrode stun guns require that you be close enough to touch the bad guy. A 4 ounce spray can of pepper spray will keep them occupied while you get away. A good knife or tactical pen will do the same, keep him down long enough for you to run. Make sure to get it in their face/eyes, use the whole can if you want. I'm not sure what the school district will allow for high schoolers to have on school property for self defense.

Make friends with the SRO. Let him or her know they are welcome in your room anytime. Soft drinks, bottled water ,snacks, whatever he or she likes in your mini fridge (You have one of those along with a small microwave, right?). Joe

Take a CD and break it in half, put duct tape on the outer edges of the smooth sides (so you have something to grip); you now have two edge weapons that you can easily hide in strategic locations.

Two unopened cans of Canada Dry seltzer water (or Mendota Springs or Coke etc) in grocery plastic bags (2 bags for strength), swing hard into attacker's groin or face, repeat as needed.

Study how Modesty Blaise beat big male attackers in those thrillers by Peter O' Donnell. I'm half serious: some of those techniques might help, but Modesty was a mistress of unarmed combat, as well as a deadly shot.

She made good use of a little wooden handle called a kongo stick, too, to strike at nerve centers. She sometimes used it as a detachable purse handle, to disguise what it was.

The only time I wrote a female fight scene (in fan fiction), my heroine (Finn, from The Lost World) sliced back with her right hand to strike a male assailant in a very sensitive area. She spun, gave him a knee in the jaw, and slammed her hands over his ears, then after he fell, she gave him a hard judo chop in the throat.

She was wearing a S&W M&P .38 with five-inch barrel, but was sneaking around in a temple of the dreaded Tecamaya tribe and couldn't fire a shot that'd alert other guards.

Hey: it was fun to write! I did include a disclaimer, warning readers NOT to try this in horseplay. It's best to do this only in extremis, when deadly force is truly warranted.

Finn was 5' 7" and about 117 pounds, so she had to do drastic things fast. If that Indian had captured her, she'd probably have been sacrificed to Aztec-like gods or been a plaything for the grim First Speaker.

Seriously, it's a pity that teachers have to worry about this stuff but you do. My mother once taught a class after integration began here that included some bused students who were arrested for murdering a store clerk during a robbery. School isn't what it was when I attended.

This thread has given me a lot of good information, advice, and ideas.
