for the sake of conversation....
Flame me if you need to. I'm sure this has been addressed sometime, but....
I went out shooting my 15/22 for only the second time. Using the small aperture on the rear sight, I can do pretty well at 25 yds. When I try the large aperture, I SUCK!!!!!!!! Is there a "proper", "preferred" way to use the rear sight?

From what I understand large hole for closer targets and small hole for more pinpoint shots at a distance. Kinda like a fine adjustment.

The small hole is for normal daylight shooting and the larger hole is for limited visibility/night shooting.

my intention was to keep mine stock--lasted 3 days...

New soldiers who have never fired a gun in their life qualify to 300 meters with those iron sights, and new Marines to 500 meters.
The large aperture is for shooting when you have your Pro Mask on in an NBC environment.

So I must ask, can I get the Pro Mask with Bifocal lenses, and will it qualify as eye protection at my local range?

Yes on both counts. Pro masks make for good eye protection, and they make prescription inserts for them.

Talk about memories, when we went through the chamber one soldier managed to fill his promask up to the eyes with puke before the DS let him out hehe.

The gas chamber sucked, but it was also a gift I didn't appreciate until later. I had been sick for all of basic training up to that point, along with everyone else in the barracks. Thanks to the gas, the sickness apparently flowed out with all that mucus from my nose and throat, and I woke up feeling like a million bucks the next morning. 
btw, the Drill Sergeants made it a special point to get us milk, all the milk we could drink, for chow right before the chamber. Some guys didn't understand and drank two, three...four boxes of milk. Yeahhhh....it all came back up about an hour later.

Proper shooting position is vital. Nose to charging handle.
The large aperture is marked 0-2 because it's designed for 200 meters and under. the unmarked is for 300 meters or whatever is on the range wheel of the rear sight. This is all for the M16A2/M4, of course, so the ranges are of little application shooting the M&P15-22.
