Unhappy WE GOT PROBLEMS

Not a grizzly Bear attack in 25 years at Yellowstone and now two deaths in two months. Something is terribly wrong here-Global Warming? Terrorism plot? George Bush? Have the Bears finally decided to band together and fight back or are these attacks individual ? Could these be sleeper cells? What in the wide world of sports is a goin' on here ????
I heard one ranger on the news this morning urging everyone to carry pepper spray as it "gives you the courage to stand your ground."
GIvne this sound piece of advice, I would expect an increase in pepper scented bear scat.

Do you think they think the same thoughts like when I eat too much Indian curry?

"Dang, this stuff burns a day later still..."

"gives you the courage to stand your ground." Suggests that people get close to a bear, get scared, and RUN. You can't win a race with a bear - Even if you're on a FAST horse...

Most likely the bear problem is either
People are constantly breaking THEE Golden Rule - DON'T FEED THE BEARS!
Or
Cubs

P.S. If you don't have any Bear Pepper Spray, always keep in mind that Smith & Wesson makes a really nice Bear 460 Spray - AND you can even load it down to a .454 Casull if recoil bothers you

People went soft and forgot why our ancestors decided it was a good idea to kill off all other reasonably large carnivore mammals in the first place. You don't hear about many people getting killed by sabre tooth cats or dire wolves...

Take along a few hippies when you're out and about in the great outdoors. If a bear should attack, you'll have someone to trip and "take one for the team".

I don't really care about the bear scat, but it sure is an amusing mental picture, Caje crawlin' around sniffin scat. I assume Y'all are burnin' time waitin' fer another hurricane? Just some advice....next time you feel real inclined to sniff some scat, just get drunk instead. Its lots easier to 'splain the next day.

Too many city folks get with nature and think the critters are cute. They also feed them or leave food handily around and hungry animals come a looking.

I prefer to take a Red Neck with -
We have a plethora of them here to choose from.

Old Red, being pretty stoned to start with, sees old Mr(s) Bear -
Decides that (s)he looks a whole lot like one of his ex's and saunters over to ask for this dance.

While this is going on you leave.

Simple - Effective - And you don't have to trip anyone

As an added bonus most of our local Red Necks are a lot of laughs to watch around the fire till the bear shows up

I learned at an early age that bears will climb trees to get your food even if you use the pulley system installed at the site to hoist your food twenty feet in the air. If they are determined then they are going to do something. I still to this day am not sure the best way to keep bears away from a camp site. But I know I won't go into the woods without at least a .357 magnum near me. Guns don't make you invincible, but they at least give you some kind of a fighting chance.

While I don't advocate the killing of all large carnivores, and believe the Parks are a great resource with many sound management policies, there could be a reasonable balance restored through limited hunting when a species becomes overpopulated.

I went up to Yellowstone for the first time late last May, we saw 10 bears in one afternoon, 1 black and 9 Grizz. The animals were down low in the valley's due to snowpack.

One of the Grizzly's had to go close to 1000 pounds, we went to the Wolf & Grizzly Center in West Yellowstone before entering the Park due to a little springtime blizzard and saw a few caged 700-1000 pound Grizzly's up close and personal, so I had a real good idea of what a big one looked like.

I live out west and my personal policy regarding National Parks has been I refuse to go into one unless I could carry a firearm, which wasn't legal until recently. If I can't legally carry I don't go there...period. There is plenty of National Forest and BLM where firearms have been legal for years...at least up until now anyways.

I live near Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and other then a couple of vehicle trips through the Park over the past 40 years, there was no way I'd get out and hike or fish and that's still my policy even with the law being changed.

While I love seeing the animals, it is not a natural environment since they are not hunted by man and therefore show no natural fear of man.

You could not pay me enough to hike or venture far from my vehicle, especially in Yellowstone were the habituated Grizzly population is way beyond it's carrying capacity, whether I was armed or not doesn't come into play, I have no desire to be the poster boy for the first "legal" shoot while carrying a firearm in the Park.

And "legal" is questionable, because I'm sure it would be argued the animal has more rights then I do, in the case of the last guy killed by the sow and two cubs, the excuse for not destroying the animal was she was simply defending her cubs.

End result, three bears educated to killing humans.

So, while I really enjoy the place, and plan to go back, I'll watch the animals from a real good distance in the many open area's and pullouts, with high powered glass and legally concealed 44 Mag on hip.

No way and I mean no way would I hike, fish or camp in Yellowstone or nearby area's.

There have been more then a few fatal attacks just outside the Park, when the population is beyond the carrying capacity the animals move out to the surrounding area's. It's nothing for a Grizz to move a hundred or more miles in a few days.

The only way for the Parks such as Yellowstone to become safe would be to allow limited hunting when a species becomes overpopulated and avoid less then aggressive prosecution if and when an armed hiker defended themselves and such reason and sanity isn't about to happen in my lifetime.

You can have your bells, pepper spray and hiking in large groups, not this guy.

"Why, is that a .348 Winchester in your pants or are you happy to see me?"

An SBR in .348 might be slightly more effective than bear spray.

Of course, 4" .500's are available right off the shelf. I would suggest one for each person in a group in big bear country.

When you spot a bear and are unsure whether it is a griz or a black bear, it is best to immediately climb a tree.

If it is a black bear, he will climb up and get ya...

Griz will simply knock the tree down.

The wild animals are just practicing their right to bear arms...

I was going to suggest a new "what's the best gun for bear" thread but I see Mr. A. Griffith already answered it. Thanks Mr. Griffith. Hi Caj!

Default Man Kills Bear In His Yard

Interesting story on the news last week.
A man shot a bear in his yard where his kids were playing.
He reported it to the local authorities and they were OK with it.
The Feds got wind of it and now are prosecuting him for shooting an endangered or protected (I forgot which one they said) species.
We are in trouble.

Always go hiking with a fat guy that smokes. If you can't outrun him, then you deserve to get eaten.

You want to be carefull fighting a bear. Do not try putting a full nelson on a bear. They tell me a bear can turn his head well past 180 degrees!

To these folks who complained about the killing of the bear, I suggest the next time this happens you'll never hear about it because people will realize honesty isn't the best policy.

Not trying to induce thread drift, but I just had the thought if a fellow starting making a list of stuff like this (seeLobo's post on the National Cemetary banning prayer), all the foolish PC stuff that just keeps piling up, he might go crazy! On the other hand, if enough people were making similar lists, maybe we could have an election outcome in 2012 that is more substantive than superficial.

Okay, thanks. No full nelsons for me in hand to hand bear combat. Hmm. Whatta ya think, Feral? Rabbit punch 'em in the kidney? Sharp step on the bear's instep? Say, "Hey! Look at the bee hive over there!," and then blindside 'em in the temple with a straight right when they look away?!

(Honestly Feral, that you even think about wrestlng a bear, boggles my mind! You are, for sure, a heckuva lot tougher than me! )

Taking the other side of the case here - I've lived in the Yellowstone area for most of my life and every now and again, some critter, be it a buffalo or a bear or a moose, offs a tourist (or maybe even a local). Usually it was someone who did something stupid to earn the critter's wrath. Then the feds go out and hunt him/her down. I say "Hey, you're on their turf! You knew it when you went in there. Let the bears, or whatever, win one once in a while."

I had a uncle that was a professional wrestler back in the 1930s and 40s. For awhile he had a tent and would do the county fair circut challanging the crowd to stay with him for a buck a minute. When he got older and out of shape I heard he bought a bear to wrestle with. Never did see it though. Dad told me a story where he and uncle art came out of a bar and started to go to their car. Another guy came out and somehow backed out on uncle arts foot. Art hollered at the guy something rough as the car had stopped on his toes. The guy looked and seen who he was and smoked the tires on his foot scratching out!
I dunno. Maybe a elbow to the throat followed up by some karate chops to the short ribs, then thumbs to the eyes followed by spitting cope into the eyes, followed by vigerous chops to the ears and some more thumb work to the nostrils so he cant see, hear or smell me and scratch out of there!

Sniffing bear scat??. Reminds me of the time I clobbered a snake behind the trash can. My neighbor said if it has a triangular head its poisonous. Heck I'm approaching 65, fat and can't run for beans. Whack them (snakes not bears are protected here in La.) with a 12 guage. Works every time. Frank

50 years ago I was doing a stint on the conservation dept fisheries div. My partner and I had a boat laying upside down on a lakeshore overnight. The next morning we threw the boat in the water and took off. A huge rat came out of hideing and ran from bow to stern, back and forth. It took us by surprise and we must have looked comical, each of us jumping up and down swinging a oar as the rat ran back and forth a dozzen times or so untill one of us connected and batted it out the boat!

Another time I came across a dead or dieing road kill deer. I threw it in the back of the truck and it came to, kicking my equipment all over. I knew it couldnt live, but for some reason decided to cut its throat on short notice rather than useing my revolver. That deer kicked the hell out of me in the process of cutting his throat!

Dad told me a similar story once of him and my uncle art going deer hunting. Art shot a big buck, but the shot didnt kill the deer. The buck come to when he was going to field dress it. I guess art had laid his rifle down and grabbed the buck by the horns and the idea hit him to kind of use the bucks power to get him closer to the road before finishing off with his knife! One of those old family storys my dad and uncles would tell when they got together.

In about 1985 a bow-hunting game guide in SW Colorado, just across from the NM border was attacked by a small (400 lbs??) female Grizzly. She mauled him up a lot and he killed her by stabbing her neck with a broadhead.

The Feds tried to go after him by claiming he intentionally shot her. He finally was able to prove self-defense.

In an area, such as that and in NM, where Grizzlies have not been seen by humans since the 1930's or before, the current crop of "outdoors-people" will probably not be able to identify a Grizzly from a black bear (in brown phase). Except someone who has hunted/seen them elsewhere.

Even so, in areas were Grizzlies have not been seen since the time period mentioned, the onus is on YOU to know the difference or you will be prosecuted. Pretty stupid in today's world.

Hmmmm....I can see a new federal program of releasing bears into populated areas to show that there are a growing number of U.S. residents that will shoot them on the spot...thus another reason to disarm the law abiding citizen....a BLM version of Fast and Furious....

Entirely too many Bears in Yellowstone. They need to be trapped and relocated to an area that provides lots of food and water. I suggest the mexican border.

Cass- How about relocating them to D.C. I think that Congress would be a good place to start.

As far as political correctness, I got this in an email today:

There is an annual contest at the University of New Brunswick calling for the most appropriate definition of a contemporary term. This year's term is: "Political Correctness".

The winner wrote:

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rapidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a piece of dung (word hopefully cleaned to forum standards) by the clean end.

I think that happened near Ouray, and its the last confirmed incident of a grizzly in Colorado. If you've got good google-fu skills, you can probably find a link to it.

But 2 years ago bear hunters saw a grizzly in the Aspen/Leadville area. Because they were experienced hunters who had been to Alaska and other places, the wildlife people believed them and actually went looking. It was up by Independence Pass.

If you enjoy such stories, read the online versions of the Aspen Daily News and the Leadville Democrat. Both honorable papers.

Yes, this is thread drift.

A few years back,I managed to get too close to a grizzly on a couple of occasions (30-40 yards) a few months apart.Really makes the hair on your neck stand up.We were fishing near the park and I was armed.Next time I'll have bear spray and make more noise!
