Highway Patrolman Model 27/28 Rare?
I acquired what I thought was a 357 Highway Patrolman model 28. Ser num s275xxx for my birthday. I think 1966 or 7? On further inspection, my friend told me that I had a "mistake" gun in that it was originally stamped a model 27, then overstamped to show 28. I can't find any other talk about this. Is this rare or not, and what is the value?

If it says "Highway Patrolman" on the right side of the barrel, it is a Model 28.
A Picture would help.

I know where there is a 6-inch version of the gun you are talking about, and the shop owner spoke to Roy Jinks and was told that while it is rare, it is more a curiousity than anything to bump up the value.

Erroneous model numbers are quite common. With so many models built on the same frame it's bound to happen and it does. Sellers think such guns are worth 50-100% more but everybody else either doesn't care or thinks the gun is slightly devalued because of the error.

On GB you will see dealers asking for a big markup on a mis-stamped S&W revolvers but they almost never get it.
