Default Cleaning a titanium cylinder

Bought a 386 mountain lite and the previous owner shot the gun somewhere btwn 2002 and yesterday. How do I get the carbon stains off the side of the cylinder? Tried break free and a tooth brush so far and didn't touch it. Need some help. Nice gun, very light. Just may be my new carry gun. Larry

I carry a 342 Ti cylinder and clean it with the lead remover cloth by Birchwood Casey and used Kroil on the entire gun. Have for years with no problems.

regards
Bill

No harsh abrasives, the titanium parts have a coating that once removed allows the metal to wear rapidly. The lead removal cloth sounds fine.

The safest way is to forget getting the "stains" off the titanium, and just live with getting the particles off with the solvent and a tooth brush. More than one titanium cylinder has been ruined by overzealous cleaning. You scrub too hard with anything and break through the coating, you'll seriously regret it.

I do not use metal on mine at all. If a synthetic brush and CLP won't do it, I leave it alone. The titanium cylinder is a pricey part of the gun and I don't want to mess it up.

My 2 cents....

I have carried a 340PD with the Ti cylinder for 5 years, and as others have said I clean normally with Hoppes and or CLP and wipe the cylinder with any residue left over. Whatever doesn't come off at that point stays on.

As you can see from my cylinder, it looks OK.

I'll try some of the suggestions mentioned here. I know the longer the stain sits, the harder it is to get off. I don't know how long ago the gun was fired and not cleaned, could have been years ago. Thanks so far, Larry

When I first bought my 340PD I asked S&W CS how to clean the Ti cylinder and the Guy suggested Never Dull. You can buy it from Walmart, but check with CS to verify what I was told. I have never found the need to us it yet, but it might work fine.

I clean the Ti cylinder on my 327 with CLP. I do not attempt to foolishly restore the cylinder to unfired condition.

Tried shooters choice bore cleaner on it, wrapped a soaked rag with CLP around it for a while and it still has the stains. Even used the yellow rag from birchwood casey on it. Guess thats the way it is and I'll live with it. Thanks for all the suggestions. Larry
