Default Pics added, W/info Question for early 29 guys...

Lets play the "whats it worth" game, lol...

1959 Vintage 6.5 inch barrel blue 29, original mint Cokes, not a mark on the gun except it does have a turn line on the cyl, not bad though. In wood pres box with all correct tools.

Can you guys give me a ball park price? Iam working a trade and need to know a value of this but I cant find a same vintage 29 in this condition that has sold recently. I am thinking maybe $1200-$1600? I am in CA so it might be valued a little higher here but prices in your area?

TIA
Matt

ADDED 9/15/11

So the box has been relined, the inside of the lid has a flat piece of foam under the new blue/purple lining. The bottom half of the box has a harder white Styrofoam with the impressions for the tools and gun. The screwdriver is the flat ground blade style.

The markings in the yoke area are as follows, above the yoke hing on the frame is the complete serial number with the S prefix and just below the number is MOD-29 Below this on the crane is stamped the assembly number 13308, which is also on the grip frame. To the right of the assembly number is a B with a small dot next to it, looks like a heat treat ping, then there is also just a small 1 and and a small 0 that dont line up with any other markings.

Let me know what you think. I might have a trade worked out on an old Auto Mag I have been looking for.
Thanks!
Matt

I would have to agree. Not an expert on the model 29 prices, but the pre 29's are in the $2,500+ range so I would think a real nice late 50's gun with all of the bells and whistles would easily be in the high teens.

Of course as with real estate it is location, location, location and with guns it is condition, condition, condition. You state that the condition is excellent so I think that gets the price up in the higher limits.

Matt - is the "wood pres box" a {Clam shell} style? I've seen them sell for $200-$400 by themselves and think the word "scarce" would be an understatement.

I've seen complete packages in that condition sell in the $1800-$2200 range on the auction sites.

There are a lot of production variations in this time frame. Serial # and pics of all the markings, pres box, tools, condition would help. But I think the price would be way north of $1200.

Matt:

As VM mentioned, the presentation case could make a big difference. If it is one of the earliest wood boxes with the blue satin lining like the pre- 29 cases, they are quite rare, the price could almost double. If it is a clam shell case with a fitted foam top and bottom in like new condition, than anything south of $1800 would be fair. It it is a latter 29-2 type case which would be the wrong case, $1200 to $1600 might be top dollar. Any photos?

A nice clamshell box with proper tools can go for $300-$500. If it's a 99+% gun with clamshell box and tools, I would think $2200-$2400 would be fair. But it has to ve VERY NICE to command that amount.

Thank you all for the great info. I ended up keeping it instead of a trade on a model 42 Winchester. I paid cash for a slightly lesser 42 for field use instead of the mint original 42 I was thinking of trading for. Yes I am a sucker for wimpy little shotguns! ;~)

My 29 has the build numbers on the yoke and grip frame with no serial number on the yoke. The serial number is on frame in the yoke area with "Model 29" just below the serial number. S198xxx is the number. The wood box is not the rare/scarce type box. I will get some pics up later. Its truly a minty gun with no marks or wear other than what I would call a medium amount of ring on the cylinder. Its not heavy or really deep but it has been fired and shows some bare metal through the blue. The original cokes are truly mint. I think I would stand by a 98%-99% rating.

The main reason I am selling this is to replace my .44amp Auto Mag that decided to blow up last year. A small spring that was weak allowed the sear to slip when the bolt came forward, fired the round when it was half way into the chamber. The frame is cracked and probably not repairable. I did sell the parts that were not damaged for more than what I bought the gun for so it was not a complete loss. I just really miss it, especially on the Silhouette range....if someone has a .44 or .357 Auto Mag pistol and you would like to trade for the 29 mentioned above please let me know.I would really prefer the .357amp since I have a .44amp barrel and I will add cash for the right Auto Mag.

I have it up for trade on the AM forum as well and if I dont get a trade offer soon I will probably list it on Gunbroker later this week.
Thank you all again!
Matt

After seeing pictures of the gun and finding that the case is not worth much, I think that the $1600 is a fair price. If it were a pre-M29, it would bring a little more. The SAT appears to be the earlier style with the chisel tip instead of the hollow ground. All that said, it's a nice gun. Be careful of the AutoMag and look carefully at the bolt retainer. I have owned a couple and some work and some don't. I had one that even Lee Jurris couldn't get to run. Lube your AutoMag with Castrol GTX synthetic oil (that's what came with the guns in the litle bottle) to avoid galling of the bolt.

I can't quite tell by the pic's but is that a 4th screw beneath the trigger gaurd or just reflection? I've only seen one AutoMag around here in my life but will look/ask around.

About a month ago I watched the most experienced and knowledgeable gunshop owner in Albuquerque pay $1800.00 for a 1958 6 1/2 S&W .44 Magnum in the box with all the tools, all appeared about mint.

I do not know what the gunshop sold the .44 Magnum for later.

I have owned and fired several of them, know the routine inside and out. There are WAY better lubricants around now, way better than the GTX. never had a problem with any of mine galling. I learned alot of what I know from Lee and a few others. All the AM's I have owned worked very well though I did have to work over a few of them to get them just right. Its actually easier now than it was back then, Wolf recoil springs, better lubes, correct headspacing among many other well know issues are not a problem anymore when you have been working on them for awhile. See the pic below of one I did a few years back to emulate one of Lee's 5 original Backpacker models, came out awesome after I cut the barrel down, made my own rear sight, barrel polish and carving/engraving like I do with my knives. Lee actually gave me some pointers when I started this one, very cool to still have him around on the AM forum too! The AM I am hopeing to get next week in trade is local so I will be able to check out the bolt and bolts lugs among the other areas to inpsect too, cant wait to have a shooter again.I bought a great unfired piece a few years back but its just too minty to shoot. Unlike other pistols, when you fire these even a few times it makes a mark on the frame from the accelerator, then its easy to tell it has been fired. I have some extra barrels, mags and parts too. Kind of a big clunky gun but really fun!
Thanks
Matt

Looks like you know a lot more about AutoMags than me. It's been years since I messed with them. I'm glad to hear that Lee is still active in the AMs - he's a very nice man as you know. They are fun to shoot and mine were all very accurate. I was one of the original members of the Club de AutoMag but sold all of my stuff a few years back. Almost bought a B model at the Kansas City guns show but purchased 2 1950 Targets instead. Can't have everything and I love mint 1950 Targets. Good luck!

I am not so sure your case has been relined. It could be an early Mod 57 case. But I cant tell what color the lining is (colorblind).

Hi Curtis,
I'm in agreement with you!! The Lining looks to be Original to me as well!! I wish he would post a couple more photos of the Case itself!! Especially the Latch Assembly & the Lower Tray underneath the Liner!! This is a Very Hard to Find Case in itself!! The Fluted Screwdriver with the Flat Ground Blade is also Correct!!

The case lining is for sure not the satin lining, I have seen that before in person. It is also not the later blue lining either, have owned many of those. The lining in it now is a purple blue velvet and it has just been rough cut to a rectangle shape and tucked in around the upper foam and lower styrafoam inserts. See pic below and I can remove the lining and show the foam inserts, did it before to look for paperwork, etc...under them.Below is a pic or two I already have of the case.
Matt

Here is another box I had for a later gun, looks the same on the outside but two latches instead of one, longer for londer barreled gun.I dont have it anymre so I cant take more pics of this one.

I found a pic of an original Clamshell box and it looks like mine is not it. This box I have has the bottom insert like a clamshell but it does not have the little finger divots in the foam around the tools. Each tool relief on a clamshell box has two divots, one above the tool and one below the tool to make it easier to remove the tools for use. Also the top half would have had a matching styrafoam insert that fit the gun like the bottom half. This could be missing and replaced with the piece of foam that is now in the top half of my box but since the tool divots are not there I dont think it was a clamshell.

Inside of box with the material removed.

Curtis is refering to the first year (1964) M57 boxes. I don't know what they looked like under the fabric but the lining was a blue/purple velvet lining. That lining was unique to those boxes.

Hi Dick,
I'm in agreement again!! This is the Case both Curtis & I both were referring to!! It's really hard to replicate that Inside Bottom Base & it looks Correct to me!! Hopefully Bill Cross(Doc44) will take notice of the Thread & let us all know if our suspicions are right!!

There is old blue fuzz on the bottom insert when I remove the velvet material, its a different color than the velvet too. I am about 99.9% that the velvet is not original. Also the cutout in the bottom piece with the velvet removed is shaped like a non tapered barrel, cant tell for sure but the 27 has the tapered barrel and this area looks to be made for a non tapered barrel gun. I wish it was an original unmolested box even if it was not the correct box for my gun. My bet would be its a .44 box a little newer than the revolver.

The case has been relined. It was made for a Model 29 since it was molded for a revolver with a 6 1/2-inch barrel and probably dates to 1969-1974.
