S&W Model 29 looking for information
I have a Pistol that belonged to my Dad, It is rather unique. I will list the things that appear to me different.
It is a Model 29- 44 Mag. With 8 3/8 inch Barrel
The Cylinder and barrel are Nickel Plated
It has a Gold Bead front sight.
It has a adjustable rear sight
It has what I think are a Target Hammer and Trigger.
If I remeber my Dad said he bought it from Rex or King Custom Firearms
Back in the 1950's.
It's Serial no. is S 106655. I don't think it has fired more than 100 rounds
I would appreciate any info about it I can Find, It's Value ? When it was built ? Who built and sold it ?
Thank you in advance for your help. Dan

S&W model 29
the Serial no is Correct as near as I can read with a Magnifing glass, If there is an error it would be the 0 in the 106 it is very hard to read but looks like a 0. I only have a phone camera so the photos are a bit fuzzy. How do I put them in ?

Verify the serial and send $50 for the letter on this one. If it is an original two-tone or "Pinto" M29 it is worth a lot of money. The only way to document this is to get the letter. If it is not original and was made up this way the value is much, much lower.
The long barrel is the least popular but a two-tone model is valuable and collectible regardless of barrel length. The box and accessories add tremendously to the value if you have them.
It should have wooden Target style stocks called "Cokes" due to the contour resembling the Coke bottle. If you can find them do so. They are worth $400 or so by themselves and missing them hurts value on the gun.
Make sure there is no corrosion underneath those awful rubber grips.

.44 Mag.
Remove the grips and look for the serial on the bottom of the grip frame.

You shouldn't need a magnifying glass or have any difficulty with the serial number. It is clearly marked on the bottom of the frame. Take the stocks off and look at the bottom of the grip frame. The letter and numbers should be plainly visible, about 3/32" high or so. Let us know what you have there.

Is there an "N" on the barrel and or cylinder? Is there a "B" on the frame under the grip or somewhere on the crane or frame where the serial number is? These might be ways to arrive closer to whether the finish is factory. Having been sold from Rex Firearms out of New York would make sense for an original Pinto(two-tone) finish pistol.

Assuming the revolver is stamped MOD-29 in the yoke cut, it was shipped in 1958 or later. Rex Firearms in NYC was well known for selling revolvers with "custom" refinements such as two-tone finishes, etc. The 8 3/8-inch barrel became available in late 1958.
The serial number stamped on the butt will provide the correct information and give us more to speculate about. Also, does the 29 have the large screw at the top of the side plate?

S&W model 29
Here is what I found, Serial No. is S196655
under the grip is a small 7 a little larger 0 and a small 83.
Under the Cylinder is a small83 and a mark that looks like a u.
under the grip is also what looks like a u it is very light.
that is all I can Find the Grips are still hidding but my Dad would not have discarded them, This gun was his pride and joy to just look at. Dan

Dan,
Are there any markings on the barrel shroud under where the ejector rod would sit when the crane is shut? This area would be hidden when the cylinder and crane are closed.
I don't see anything in the picture you posted.

Dan...Your Model 29 dates to 1959/1960 and certainly could be an original two-tone with a McGivern front sight and an 8 3/8-inch barrel. Particularly, if it was purchased from Rex Firearms. I would request a factory letter if I were you as it will state if the two-tone is the original finish and if the McGivern front sight is original. The letter will also tell you when and where the gun was shipped as well as the original barrel length. The information will be well worth the $50 for the letter.

If everything is original (two-tone finish, McGivern front sight) and 98 percent or better, I would say $2650 without the original stocks and around $3000 with them.
These are ballpark estimates and may vary depending on the collector wanting the 29 for his/her collection.

Anything in the bill of sale about finish? What was the price? Doc44 and others can tell you if the price reflects a custom finish.
I hope I didn't use any naughty letters. Bad SaxonPig... bad!

Dan,
Your pistol truly isn't worth what it likely is without that factory letter. Here's some pics of the markings you might find on a factory Pinto gun. The experts here were 99% confident that my gun was a factory Pinto gun when I asked them about it, but the $50 factory letter request is what sealed the deal. If in the case that you would ever need to sell it (heaven forbid) then you'd want a factory letter to accompany it and ensure it is evaluated accurrately.
And thanks for the heads up Lee. I forget all the benefits that come with the membership.

Variation is normal from what we've seen here. Even more reason to send in a factory letter request.
