Default Real world value-Unfired 6" 27-2, and exc. 17-2.

Like the title says, what would the experts here consider to be the value (buying) of a 6" 27-2, with the presentation case, in unfired condition?

Also, what should I expect to have to pay for an excellent condition 6", 17-2. Has been shot some, but the bluing is beautiful, no wear and a slight turn line.

Thanks.

For the model 27-2, $650-700 is the figure that comes to mind, but with no recent sales to support this number. I would guess about $600 for the model 17-2. Interested to see what others think.

I have the highest respect for the opinions and estimates by murphydog and his post here emphasizes why.

Contrary to so many posts replying to requests for values his post has included the statement... "but with no recent sales to support this number" .....which indicates certain important info may be missing.

Prices tend to vary so much from one area of the country to another that any definitive figure, without an appropriate number sampling, is almost impossible...

When a request is made for a value estimate so many descriptors need to be included to provide any rational opinions useful to the requester or, for that matter, other interested members of this board....

Pictures, model, dash number, barrel length, finish, scarcity, extras such as tools, presentation case or original box, original grips, paper work, any modifications -- all have a major impact on a revolvers value and must be entered into the value equasion.....

So far on this thread I've seen quotes from $600 to over $1000. All can be credible and accurate. I've seen 27s sell for less than $600 and more than $1000. Guys...that leaves us with a $400 dollar discrepancy with just a couple of posts here, and rightfully so with the description given!

I try not to reply to any request for value anymore unless the OP includes much of the info needed to provide a fair and honest assessment. It seems to me it's important for members of this board to maintain a level of credibility for accurate value assessment as this is the place to go on the internet for all S&W information...

JMHO and flame suit is on.....

I 'll offer a comment on the Model 17.

A month ago I purchased a 17-3 in the same condition you are describing for the 17-2 you are considering. A beautiful gun in the advertised pictures; even better in hand. I paid $600 plus the receiving FFL fee for just the gun with no extras. I'm getting ready to take it to the range again this morning. It is a terrific handgun; a real pleasure to shoot and I am happy with the purchase. I hope this helps.

I must say the reason for your purchase should have something to do with the value of the gun to you. The value of a gun, when purchasing it, is actually based on YOU as much as the gun itself. May I elaborate a bit?

Paid $450 for my first 27-2 6" blued beauty with no accessories in 98%+ condition at least. Bought it to hunt whitetails with if in close enough range. After a season of a few nicks here and there from the deer stand and such, I found a much better holster to better protect it. I even painted the sights with high gloss fingernail polish for low-light applications. I eventually grew tired of toting it.

My next 27-2 blued 6" I paid $600 for: same condition and same lack of accessories, but a few years had transpired. Still in like condition. I bought it for the reason of having one in great condition. I personally do not care for a presentation case unless it is for a more valuable gun and I know it is original to the gun. The 27-2 6" is a great gun, but I have no use for a presentation case to take up more room and have to care for to go with one of these. The original serial-numbered blue box would be a definitely different situation. Just my personal wishes and desires.

I see them selling with presentation case on the auctions and sometimes even here for way more than I would pay for them. Why? They are $600 guns to me, $650 max, and the last thing I need right now. If I had need of one to fill a void in a collection, I may very well pay a much higher price for the right one. My needs, wants, and desires affect what I would then pay for one.

A Model 17-2? Have no need for one at present. To me, it is a $550 gun with no accessories. If it is an earlier dash two with diamond grips like the earlier 14-2 can be found with, the value goes up another $50. I'm not saying they are available like that; just if they are. Never seen one of those with a presentation case, so that does not matter. Now if I were to find a minty 17-2 with the original blue box and accessories wearing diamond magnas, all matching and original, it might interest me for the right price just because. Gun by itself? Have a few K-22s already. I would like to have a nice dash two or three for plinking, but the last one I saw locally was for $795. Wrong grips. Wrong price. Not for me.

Personal preference and needs add to the equation of value to me. I could care less for what part of the country it is in. That value would then be for someone else and not me.

As noted in an earlier response - the price is lik buying a home; i.e. location, location, location.
Prices fluctuate a great deal around this country.
Around here - Suburban Detroit, I doubt that you'd see the 27 offered for less than $700 - IMO.

I am glad to have this resource and knowledge base to learn from, as I've not been doing this for many years like many of you have. I'm trying to learn as much, as fast, as I can.

I appreciate the responses and agree with everything said. I run across these great finds at different places and would like to buy them all, but can't. I am unable to pay an ultra-premium price for something, just because I don't want to leave it behind.

"Real world" price to me is what 2 members here would buy or sell for to each other. The auction and sell sites and full of people trying to hit a home run on someone with deep pockets, who has to have what they are selling. Not always useful information.

I've decided to purchase the 27-2. At a bit north of $700 by the time I get it home, and with incorrect stocks, I will probably pass on the 17-2. Thanks for the help.

From what I have learned on this board in a very limited time is that prices do go up and down depending on geographic location. Here, in the New England, S&W's are higher priced than in different parts of the country.
