Post M&P & my first IDPA shoot - Issue uncovered (UPDATE)

At the last IDPA match I attended, I was having failures to go into battery. This video describes problem:

M&P Failure To Go Into Battery Issue - YouTube

Let me know if you have any ideas, or if you have heard about this problem. It is not a break-in issue, I am way past 500 rounds w/ this pistol already, and it is kept very clean & lubricated. Spring is not culpret either, issue occurs w/ 4 different springs & 2 different guide rods. That included the factory one too.

I had a Kahr that did that and I found that as the fresh round was slid off the mag the rim of the case was binding between the rear of the slide and the ejector. That gun was used when I bought it and had many rounds through it so it should have not had the issue but I never could get it corrected so I had to move it. I have found that my M&P 45 can chamber a round cleanly even if I hold the slide as I chamber a round but I do get some resistance from my 9.My 9 is brand new and having not fired a round through it yet I can give it some slack but in your case, having so many rounds through the gun, I do not know what to tell you. A trip to S&W might just be in order. Good luck and keep us informed how you make out.
Be safe, Frank.

Yea, I am leaning towards the extractor at this point. As long as S&W takes care of it I am good.

Thanks for support!

The video shows the effect with slow hand control, the slide motion during firing is, or should be much more forceful. That's what needs to be addressed.

Since this only occurs when chambering a cartridge it's extractor related but there may be nothing wrong with the extractor. (You didn't mean ejector, I hope ). A weak or marginal recoil spring may not provide enough force to fully close the slide.

A thumb or finger riding the slide is also known to slow the slide enough to cause various stoppages. As can dinguses added to the recoil system and using grease instead of CLP.

Certainly could be the extractor, though. Ace makes a more robust version but it takes a very strong punch to change it out.

Extractor tension is something M1911 folks learn as an art. Too much and you get this effect. Too little and you don't get ejection as the case falls off the extractor. But the M&P extractor isn't adjustable.

Yea, I meant extractor, I edited to fix. lol No matter how I do it when there is no round in the chamber, it never fails. Only when one is in the chamber, and now it is happening when I shoot. I had like a dozen, or so failures at the match. The inside of my palm was bruised from slappin' the slide forward all day long.

Call S&W, they will issue a call tag and send it to them. About a week later and your gun will arrive after spending some time in the "Get Well Soon " corner and then life is great again.
S&W Customer Service is fabulous.

Thanks for the support. Yea, I am confident S&W will handle the issue appropriately. They have had it for a couple days now, so it's just a waiting game at this point. I had a similar issue, w/ my AR from Spikes Tactical, that has since been rectified 100%. Apparently the bolt & chamber were out of spec a bit causing rounds to randomly get stuck in the chamber not allowing full battery to occur.

The gun was just received by me from second visit to S&W. They changed the barrel which has noticeable differences in the tip of the barrel as well as the dimensions & angle of the feed ramp.

I will be doing a range report via YouTube and posting all findings. Currently manual issue has been completely resolved, the only thing I am concerned about is any accuracy issues as a result of the new barrel.

Stay tuned!

I was gonna suggest feed ramp, but S&W beat me to it. My new 357C did a similar thing first time at the range. I had several rounds where the nose of the bullet shoved squarely against the feed ramp, and about 3 rounds failed to go fully into battery when fed. I used some 400 grit paper and my finger tip to lightly polish the bottom edge of the feed ramp where it meets the mag. I then cleaned the gun and went back to the range, and had no further incident. I liked you video, too, BTW. Good luck and please post a follow up after you shoot it.
