Hi From Prunedale
Hi, I'm Sue from Prunedale CA. I've been a a shooter and gun fan for many years and recently began pistol shooting a lot. I bought a 357 new many years ago and would like some help finding a little more about it.
It's a:
SW model 66-2
3" barrel (kind of rare)
Stainless Steel
Adjustable rear sights, black
Ser. AFK 7700
Any one know where it was manufactured and the year, value?
Thank You for the help.
Sue

Hi Sue....
Welcome to the forum! It's always great to see new people joining us and expressing an interest in S&W handguns.
I was born and raised in the Monterey Bay area so I'm familiar with where you live!
Your Mod 66-2 is a "K" frame 357 magnum handgun. The dash 2 after the model number indicates the second level of engineering changes to that particular firearm. The first factory change (dash 1) involved very minor changes. The second change (dash 2), which your 66 is, involved significant changes to the original gun. The change eliminated the pinned barrel and the recessed cylinder. Those two changes were "across the board" for all S&W handguns and occurred about 1982.. Without having access to production dates right now I would guess you 66 was produced on or about 1983/84.
Your dash two 66 was the first model offering the 3 inch barrel. It is a very desirable barrel length and it is much sought after today by collectors and shooters alike. The "K" frame .357 magnums are no longer in production and that heightens their appeal even more.
I don't comment on value without handling the gun or at least seeing pictures. I will say your 3" 66 is worth more than any of the other barrel lengths of that genre. I would suggest you try to keep the original box, tools, and all data included with the gun as they all add significantly to its value.
Be careful as this can become a very addictive hobby, even for the ladies...

Hello, Sue, and welcome to The Forum from up the coast in Washington. Been through Prunedale many times on my way from Seattle to SLO and back. Usually at about 75+ trying not to get run over by the guy behind me.
Always happy to see a Californian on the board - I know you folks have a lot more hoops to jump through than most of the rest of us. Pleased to meet you.

Thanks for the warm welcome and the information on my 66. It really is a pleaseure to shoot. I mainly carry it while hiking or riding my horse in the woods, I always worry about mountain lions where I go, they're like ground squirrels are everywhere else.
Regards,
Sue

If you ever have to shoot while mounted, even if you've trained your mount about gunfire be sure you have a REAL good grip on the pommel!

If my horse Modoc and ever encounters a mountain lion I won't have to worry about shooting from the saddle, Modoc will make sure I'm on the ground!
