LOBONCA:
You
may be able to obtain a sear block that will accept a thumb safety, but my understanding is that you can't.... You would need to cut out the grip a little for the levers, but that's not critical. Swapping sear blocks is pretty easy.
If your gun doesn't have a Hilary Lock, there's a
chance that you have the right sear block now, but I wouldn't count on it. (The Hilary Lock requires about a quarter-inch hole through the sear block, behind the sear disconnect lever. Models with a thumb safety don't have that hole.)
You may also be able to find a sear block here that somebody want's to swap, but that's a "who knows"
....
I decided I wanted a thumb safety on my 40C because I do carry it, and I'm a 1911 guy. I picked up a 9C for my daughter with a thumb safety, and when she told me that she didn't want the gun (long story), I swapped grips - the 9C, 40C, and the 357C have identical grips (other than the thumb safety issues).
Other than a training compatibility issue, IMHO, the thumb safety on an M&P is a waste of time, and MUST be hacked a bit (unless you're lucky) to make sure it stays where you left it. A little soft, and a little too easy to move, otherwise.
I'm sure S&W offered the thing only because someplace in the big market (i.e., Law Enforcement) somebody asked for it....
