Default new user question

i just purchased a m&p 340ct. what are the thoughts on using .357 magnum vs. .38 +p. i am using this firearm for defensive and personal protection. i have read a lot of mixed feelings about this matter, but i thought i would try and get the smith and wesson forum to give me a more knowledgeable answer. thanks.

Have you shot 357's in it? These light frame revolvers are very strong and durable but as someone who has put lots of rounds downrange, in my opinion, the recoil is punishing. Your best bet is to go to the range with both 357 and 38SPL+P and get a feel for your abilities and comfort levels with both. The new Hornady Critical Defense 357 seems to have a bit less felt recoil in the guns I have shot it in and might be worth a try if you want to carry with 357. Personally, I find the 38SPL+P's really manageable and smoother shooting in lightweight J frames. Let us know!

Ed is so right! Your handgun is small and weighs a scant 13.3 ounces. Shooting full magnum loads out of it feels like an explosion in your hand!!! My Models 60 and 640 are 10 ounces heavier and I still shy away from full magnum loads. For Personal protection I load 125 grain 38 Spec+Ps.

It's very, very difficult to make follow-up shots with ultra-high recoil handguns. I recommend .38 Special +P or even standard pressure .38 Special in that gun.
