Default So, these S&W M&P 45's are pretty good?

Trying to make up my mind which 45acp DA semi I'd like to own. Lots of choices Ruger, Sig, Glock but I hear that the M&P is pretty good. Any thing to watch out for or are they pretty much "bullet proof" as far as semis go? Thanks.

Several thousand rounds through mine and not one hiccup. More comfortable than my 1911s as well. I added the Apex DCAEK and it is one sweet shooter.

I've had my 45 4" for 2 months and run 410 rounds of the cheapest junk I can find, both fmj and jhp. Not one problem, one of the best OTB guns I've ever shot.

Just over 5K through my 45 full size and no complaints. I'm very comfortable with this pistol.

Well, thanks for the posts but at this point it doesn't look like it matters much. The guy is stuck on $450 for a used full size M&P 45 and won't come down. I'd have gone $400 but geeze, Bud's has em' new for $500.
Maybe if I shop around I can find one. Thanks. Talk to ya'll later.

Ummmmm.....no. My agency issues it. It is junk. The entire agency's allotment of M&P 45s has been recalled once. Im on my second but some deputies are on their 3rd, 4th, or 5th. Last time we qualified (March) out of 12, 3 failed on the line and had to be replaced on the line. Failures to fire, failures to feed, failures to eject, broken strikers, front sights (and rear) falling off, rusted magazines, rusted slides, chipped finishes on the slides, disfigured followers, and stripped out grip insert pins just to name a few. And to think these replaced 4566s. I believe we traded one for one, but I could be wrong. One of the big selling points was switchable inserts for smaller hands....when I measured, the 4566 with a straight grip was smaller around than my M&P with the smallest insert.

If you want a great 45, buy a 3rd generation S&W. They are the best. You want polymer? Buy a Glock 21.......remember, it is the pistol all other poly pistols are chasing.

You would be wrong. These problems showed up within the first 2-3 months. All recalled within the first 6 months. Two years in we are still replacing them periodically.

Im not sure how sights falling off is related to maintenance......

I'm a retired Police firearms instructor and the M&P 45s have been great guns IMHO. My compact serves faithfully as my bedside and winter CC gun.

I shot a friends of mine, he is a LEO and I am not. I carry a Glock 21 for CCW, he carries a Glock 22 on duty. The M&P surprised me. I shoot a few of them before and they seemed fine to me, even though for that type of pistol, I prefer the Glock 20/21. His .45 had 8 FTE's with three different brands of ammo. He had agency issued JHP's and we had WWB 230 FMJ and some Federal as well.

I love S&W revolvers, just dont care for the polymer line of defense pistols. I think I will stick with my Glock for that

I love mine, been flawless, as has all 4 of my M&P's. Me thinks someone has a case of sour grapes, a lot of exaggeration and just doesn't like things to change. But then, maybe he's just trying to discourage sales of the M&P so there are more available for himself... All I can think about lately, is the fact that the new Mass gun approval list has recently come out and the M&P45c is now approved to be sold in Mass. Now all I need to do is wait for S&W to get a 10lb trigger built in to a 45c and I'll have another one at my fingertips.

Well, I went to the local pawn shop and took a look at a full size M&P 45 and I've got to tell ya'll, it felt pretty good, light weight, sights were nice, seems to be a decent gun. So, what's a fair price for a used one with two mags?

Well, you can get a NIB online for $398 plus FFL fees,so i'de say a good used one would sell for $325-$375.Have you looked at prices on the gun brokers websites?

On several ships I was stationed on I pull Duty Gunnersmate watch, which intailed changing out the deck watch's 1911 and 2 mags every 24 hours. In that short 24 time frame, it was not uncommon to find on the returned 1911, bent or broken sites, bent trigger guards, broken grips, deck paint on the slide, missing rounds from the mags. One time, I was woken up at 3 am to replace a 1911, that had gotten flipped over the side, while the PO of the Watch was practicing his quick draw.

My point is most damage to a Duty Weapon is due to miss handling. So sites can and due get damgaged or knocked off because of miss handling.

First I've heard of widespread problems like the other poster referenced. I helped test the M&P .45 for the agency I retired from in '08. They ended up adopting it for the duty weapon (replacing worn and increasingly expensive 4566's).

This is a 700+ man department, and I've not heard of any particular problems.
This past Spring I attended a S&W M&P Armorer's Course and was quite impressed with what I learned of the design.
I have one now, a 4" .45 and while I've not tortured it, it has proven reliable, accurate and dependable.

A few years back, Milwaukee PD dumped their Glocks for the M&P40. I know this is a thread about the 45, but I am speaking to the M&P in general which someone is trying to trash here. That is over 2000 pistols. I know several officers in this department. I shoot with one of them, and we have talked at length about the M&P. She was the one who convinced me to buy my first one, and I now own four, including a 4.5" 45. All have been flawless performers. According to the officers I have talked with, the M&P is a well liked gun that has performed very well for the department. If these guns were having all of these issues this board would be littered with threads about the supposed problems, and the sales of the gun would be in the toilet. As it is, PDs all around the country are adopting the weapon for their officers, and it can often be difficult for civilians to find inventory available for purchase. The posts on this board are almost exclusively about isolated issues and not systemic problems with the guns. I would also add, and with no disrespect to anyone on this forum, that many of the posters here who are having issues with their guns are obvious amateur first time gun owners who still have much to learn about firearms and I am glad they are here.

I originally owned a full size M&P45 but replaced it with the Compact when they became available. This is now my favorite 45 and has been 100% reliable thru a couple thousand rounds to date. I made this fine pistol even better by sending it to Robar for their NP3 finish.

Yes I know, I tipped you off to Express in another post.
I thought it was a fantastic deal, but now I understand for all LEO and military S&W will discount guns. I think Express is pretty liberal on their criteria and worth a shot asking even if you don't think you are a first responder.

1600 + rounds through my M&P 45 mid since May. One malfunction due to a ****** reload with a crunched case mouth. It is now my primary carry gun for daily use.
