Need info on 5-Screw CTG
Hi everyone - first time poster.
I have an "inherited" 5-screw .38 spl. CTG s/n 4598xx
Probably 70% - some pitting on right side and holster wear around muzzle.
Someone told me this dates to 1921. Curious on approximate value or any other thoughts. Looks to be a 5" bbl measured from front of cylinder.
Any help is appreciated.

If it is a 6 shot 38 Special revolver with a swing out cylinder and if the the serial provided is correct it sounds like a Military & Police Model from the early 1920s.

I think 1924 is a little likelier for that serial number.
There were hundreds of thousands of these prewar .38 M&Ps manufactured, so there is no scarcity premium. Value depends on condition. A basic shooter with a sound action but some finish issues is probably a $250-300 gun. Almost unfired, in high condition, and with its original box you could push $700 or maybe a little more. Sounds like yours might be a $300 revolver.
EDITED TO ADD: And welcome to the forum. I should have said that first off.

Lots of variables on price, Grips, sights, round butt or square butt, chamber and barrel condition, etc. If you have a digital camera take some pics and load them to your computer Then go to advanced and manage attachments and post them.

jtcarn, welcome to the Forum! You can learn alot here. I have a1905 4th. change M&P, serial#2996xx that shipped June of 1919. Though, not rare, or valuable, as stated, they are good shooters. Also fun to shoot! Go over the gun with 0000 steel wool and oil, if you want to remove some of your rust issues. Bob

FYI: "CTG" is simply an abbreviation for CARTRIDGE. It is not a model designator.

Thanks for all the help everyone. And thanks CGT - I guess i didn't realize what CTG means - makes sense. See attached for a photo - anything else anyone can add? Is this considered a J or K frame?

Two thinks I can add. One, the 'MADE IN USA' marking on the right side first began appearing on S&W's in 1924. Second - that sir, is a K frame, and a nice looking old gun.

It has a 5" barrel, and the stocks appear original and are from a gun of the 1920s. It is a K or medium frame; the J frame didn't appear until about 1950. Enjoy!
