welcome to the forum! i assume the numbers are off the bottom of the gripframe on both guns. i would estimate 56ish on the airweight, and maybe 58ish on the chief. post some pics! we love pics!

The serial number given for the Model 37 can't be correct if it's in fact marked as a Model 37. Has a "J" prefix on that one (and maybe on both) been omitted? Bears a great deal on properly dating them. J84048 would've shipped around 1970.

Hey Gentlemen,
Thanks for your responses. The 37 isn't actually marked 37 and the # is just 84048 on the but. There is a Jx and a number under the crane in the frame. I'll have to learn how to post a photo.

the numbers in the crane area are just "fitting" or "assembly" numbers, and have no real meaning after the gun is finished. the number on the butt is the serial number. no flatlatch gun should have a "j" prefix. the model numbers were stamped roughly in 1957. i will still estimate 56ish on the airweight (pre37, if you will!), and 58ish on the chief (probably model marked 36).

Thanks for the information, i'm pleased to know they are both that old. You're right, the 36 is stamped 36 no dash and nothing else.
