Default Prophets of Doom on History channel

Did anyone catch the show Prophets of Doom on the History channel? I really enjoyed it, and I see it is coming on again soon so maybe you can TIVO it.

They have a panel of scholars who each study a different issue they think is going to be the downfall of the US. The major issues I remember are, Water, Food, Money, Nuclear Terrorism, Artificial Intelligence, and Energy. They all make terrific albeit scary predictions about the near future.

In the end, all these experts say we will become a more local community based culture. The US will retract within its borders. They say now the typical meal consumed comes from 1400 miles away.

Self defense will be a big issue during this transitional period of going from a super-power to a self-sustaining country.

I watched it a while back. I don't remember the details but it seemed like some of the folks on the panel were just silly.

I'll put my silly talk hat on too! We need to start eating much more local now, before huge corporations own all the farms. But that probably can't be stopped seeing how .gov is trying to rid us of small farms as hard as they can.

I keep seeing some pretty dire warnings about the economy and the very near future. As in before the 2012 elections. Cities, counties, states- and the Feds- with all the partisanship (therefore lack of legislation to fix things) will have to cut way back on welfare-type programs which will cause widespread rioting. Add that to many city-state employee unions having their benefits cut and thus they will join the riots/protests- I have been stocking up on ammo quite honestly. Not thousands of rounds, but an extra box here and there.

The money expert said one out of eight people in the US is on food stamps today.

We use twice the amount of oil as we produce.

Expect that incomes will go DOWN every year instead of going up as they used to. We came VERY close to financial ruin in 2008, we can get through this but expect some radical changes.

Looking to the History Channel for insight into the end times is about like asking Barbara Walters how to get to heaven.

The program wasn't really the end of the world type thing, but a change in the way things are. It's happening whether people want to acknowledge it or not, the world is changing and we can either face it and work with it or end up like Rome.

I have seen that. Also if you have seen, on the History Channel, 'Surviving Armageddon' they had 6-8 experts in survival, medical, finance, hunting, etc.
Being armed was REALLY stressed, and barter, box of .22's, or .223's for food or medicine was stressed. This was also emphasized by a guy who goes by the name FAL on a few of the gun sites. He lives, and survived the TOTAL economic collapse in Argentina. He is worth doing a Google on as he has written dozens of articles/short stories on the weapons to have, he stresses WHEEL GUNS, for their reliability and the fact that unlike long guns a handgun can be with you 24/7. Good read.

In the 70's I went back to college under the LEEP (Law Enforcement Education Program) to obtain a degree in Criminal Justice. For the history course I elected to study the history of the Roman Empire. Anyone who denies the parallels between their society and ours hasn't studied this subject.

Another thought on the economy, after someone mentioned 1 of 8 on food stamps. 48% of working Americans get a check from government. Adding city, county, state, federal- AND all the civilians working under contract to those govt. entities- that means 52% of us are supporting that other 48%. This 'expert' mentioned that govt's are really the only people hiring right now, especially the feds. Some will show stats that fed employee numbers are dropping but others disagree. Anyway, the 'expert' said what happens when- consider obama wants to do all that road repair, bridge repair putting more to work- on the govt payroll!- what happens when the numbers switch- 52% working for govt checks? How will we be able to pay enough taxes to support the MAJORITY?

I have read bits and pieces of world history and the failure of nations/societies and I am afraid we are going in that direction and faster than any before us. The process of information and data is so much faster now and therefore so many "things" happen faster now.

I do not believe we will be able to change the outcome with one exception to that belief. This nation has the "free-est" transfer of information amongst its citizens that "maybe" the citizenship will finally stand up and "re-acquire" their government and the nation.

But I doubt it. The citizenry of this nation is, on the average, politically stupid. I have had supposedly educated people tell me they voted for "so-and-so" because he promised he'd get the troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq. They said they felt sorry for the troops over there and wanted them home. What these supposedly intelligent people did not think about is, first off, they never were in the military and have no clue as to how the military and political outcomes occur.

There is supposedly a great wealth of natural resources in Afghanistan...I don't think we will leave. Iraq we will, someday, but look at Bosnia, Serbia, Germany, Japan, Korea, Okinawa...we're still there. So these people wasted their votes for the wrong reasons. The U.S. needs to get out of most of these places but won't.

Most citizens today do not read history, and do not follow politics much past the question of: "Will he/she outlaw my drug use? abortion? gay marriage? etc., etc." Which to me are "diversion issues". They divert people's thoughts from what the government is really doing.

And that is our BIGGEST problem. The Congress and at least EVERY President since FDR has sold this country down the creek. THAT is our biggest problem. The social issues are minor.

Our nation was set up to have the people control the government. It is now the other way around and not enough people care. They are too busy taking the kids to soccer, and yes, collecting S&Ws (i.e. too busy with self-interest) to take the actual, physical active work that is going to be necessary to turn things around.

The government has slowly been "cooking-the lobster" for a long time. Their policies have incrementally infringed on our rights to the point that most people are not aware of it. Look at it this way. How much of the current "law"(feces) that the government hands out would your great-grandparents have put up with?

And yes, the government has wisely seen that the more people on the government dole the more there will be people that will allow the government to "call-the-tune". This is both of the dominant political party's viewpoints.

I worked for the Federal Government for 35 years. Four as a Marine air traffic controller and 31 as an FAA atc. You are getting a heck of a lot of "bang-for-your-buck" with the current FAA ATC system. Even if it is not as good as it was prior to and shortly after the PATCO strike. Hence we do need GOOD government programs. But there are a lot that need to be revamped, downsized, and all out eliminated. However that won't happen I'm thinking.

To me, as I view history from my small seat, it is going to take a "benovelent" dictatorship to get this country back on track. I don't see that happening.

Currently I continue to vote, and I may actually get involved in the next round of campaigns as a volunteer for a candidate that I like. But quite frankly I am afraid we are going downhill and my only hope is that I will be gone before it gets worse.

Phew!! Ya'll really got me on a roll here. Sorry 'bout that.

Semperfi, it started long before FDR. Try Abe Lincoln. He started the draft, suspended the writ of habeas corpus, entered into war without the consent of congress, etc. All the presidents since have emulated his approach to the constitution. Woodrow Wilson played pretty loose with the law during his time.
I think that secession should be looked at as a way to save most of the republic. Some of the states have slide to far down the slope to be saved, I am afraid.

Regarding this program, one of the more interesting comments concerned our attention span and thinking/planning for the future. The consensus was that we don't think about 25 years from now, or even 10. We're focused on the here and now, today, what's best for us "right now". As a country we're great at building. At maintaining, not so much. That's why we build great bridges, dams, and highways, only to watch them deteriorate. When they fail, we rebuild them. We sold ourselves on the myth that every generation would live better than the last. The middle class couldn't maintain its lifestyle so it started using the credit card in an attempt to do so. That's where we are now, trying to live the good life through shopping channels on tv and the credit card (perhaps someone can explain why, if we are in such an economic mess, these shopping channels are doing so well selling junk made in China, but that's another issue). Problem is, others in the world see our lifestyle and want a piece of the action. The pie (resources that are limited) is being sliced thinner and thinner. The one thing we can all seem to agree on is that the best times are behind us and the future looks less promising every day.

You are not biased are you ? Hmmmm you support the other side of the issue then ... less government, no regulators ...? Is that not how we ended up with the current economic problems. Let us privatize it all. People out for profits won't shaft us, or will they ? WE can all depend upon the 'Trickle down' from Big Business to float our boats. Hmmmmm Greenspan admitted he was wrong.

What are the chances that Human ignorance will be the ultimate cause of doom? Not some biological, astronomical or astrological cause. Just the pure ingnorant preferences of mankind?

Members interested in this topic will enjoy and profit by reading Jared Diamond's Collapse, Why Societie's Choose to Fail, which examines why societies or perhaps more properly, cultures and economies, have failed from ignorance or stubborn refusal to face facts. The current situation in Greece is an example (not among his...). Diamond looks at various cultures that pressed ahead with doomed shortsighted plans --- the Norse trying to emulate European agricultural practices in Vineland, the deforestation and resultant loss of topsoil in the South Seas and Haiti, and similar self-defeating endeavors. For other examples, also see 1493 (author's name escapes me at the moment, and no reference at hand...) which elaborates on the economic/agricultural/cultural cross-pollination resulting from Columbus's "discovery" of the New World, and some of the resulting catastrophes...
