640 .38 price check
One locally for 400.00. Looks to have the smooth S&W wood grips.
I'd have to pay taxes, so probably closer to 435.00 OTD.
Thanks.

That's not a bad price. Make sure it doesn't have the key lock on it.

Is it a magnum gun? If so, that's a steal.

Verified it's no lock and he could do $400 OTD.
May have to make a road trip.

For $400 out the door, look at it like this:
New (with lock) S&W J-frames are selling for that, and a bit more in some places. All Steel pre-lock j-frames are MUCH better guns in almost every respect (some people swear the airweight guns are much lighter. I can barely tell the difference).

That is a reasonable price in my area. I have noticed that clean J frames sell for close to new price most of the time. I would not worry to much about the Lock. From what I have seen and read they rarely ever give a problem. They are also rarely ever used by anyone.
I really wish S&W would send them with an external trigger lock that you could leave in the factory box just like you will do the Key on a Lock model. It would make most S&W owners much happier.

$400 with the original rosewood grips isn't a steal but it's worth that. The 38 Special 640's are the best of the breed

I hope that the OP went back and bought this.
Hypothetically, if you backed out $20 for shipping and another a transfer fee to your local dealer, you would be looking at a $360 revolver on an auction site. Good luck finding that one on GunBroker or AuctionArms.

OK
Smith & Wesson Model 640 .38 SPL Revolver NR! : Revolvers at GunBroker.com
Smith Wesson 640 38 spl : Revolvers at GunBroker.com
Neither of these were mine to buy or sell. $400 is still a good price.

Either a 457 or 908S.
The guy still has the 640 and showed interest in both my autos. But, it's a pawn shop, so I'm guessing he's gonna try to get both my autos for the 640. That ain't happening.

I asked the very same question last week. Wound up getting $320 out-the-door in mine and I was told I "done good". From what I can tell....anything close to $400 would be a good price.

I was just watching a Gunbroker auction and saw a very nice cond. one listed for 350.00, no reserve.
Not one bid. I was a bit surprised.

If you have an FFL dealer in the family like I do...Gunbroker prices can "work out" but you have to consider the shipping cost (some ask as much as $50) and then the FFL dealer transfer cost to get your hands on it at that price. That $350 gun could easily wind up costing well over $350. That has a lot to do with whether a gun is "cheap" or not from places like Gunbroker.

Interesting. My three carry guns are 640 (No Dash), 457, 3913. I wouldn't give up the 457 or the 3913 for a 640. On the other hand I carried the 640 everyday for 5 years and I would not want to give that one up either.
I paid $225 for my 640 about 10 years ago. I think it had lead a rough life and it needed a trip back to S&W to get some problems fixed. It has been 100% since that time. The 640s are great guns but the price people want for them has gone up quite a bit and I am just not sure if they are worth what is being asked when compared to the going price for a 3913/908 or 457.

I really like the 457 and it's portability when carried IWB. .45 hollowpoints are comforting when on the hip. As you very well know.
The 640 seller will probably not want to trade straight up, so I'm probably putting the cart before the horse.

That's right. 640s are heavy little guns, so you better be sure that is what you want (airweight guns make much better pocket guns if weight is the issue), but when it comes to doing what they are meant to do, the .38 Special 640s are the state of the art, to me. The magnum versions make no worthwhile improvements that are not offset by other factors.
If I wanted that gun and it was in good shape, I wouldn't quibble on that $400 price.
