Question A "What is it worth" question ?

New guy here. Been lurking but I see this is the place for S&W questions and information. I have used and carried 'Smiths' since 1969, and I am loyal to the brand.
Now my question:

I have a Smith & Wesson Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman with 6" bbl. It is pinned and recessed with a N 277xxx serial number.
It is LNIB. I have the original box, the brown wax paper it was wrapped in, the S&W literature, the S&W screw driver & cleaning rod, bore brush and cotton pad which is dirty from original cleaning.
It is just as issued with the original Magna grips. It was my late father's gun and it has been untouched in the box since the 70's and was fired 6 times by my dad.
I have quite a few of my father's firearms. Ones that meant more to him I will keep and pass down to my grandson. This Model 28, I know he wasn't crazy about since after 6 rounds he cleaned it, put in back in the box and never took it out again
I see 28's for sale, mostly used in the $400 to $650 range. I was just wondering if all the original packaging and condition would make it worth any more, to someone like an S&W collector.

I have my own 28, which I love and I am thinking of selling this one or trading for something different.

Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Model 28-2's have seen a price rise during the past 18 months but with an N serial number with all the goodies I think $550 to $600 is about as high as I would go and that I have seen them selling for. The 6 inch sells for usually $100 less then the 4 inch version. An S serial number prefix usually brings an extra $50 to $100 for a 28-2.

I hope this helps and the prices also vary by region of the country and the 6 inch is probably worth a little more to someone who might want to use it for hunting.

I also think $600 about right for your Highway Patrolman with the original box.

You may also consider going to a gunshow and finding some things to trade. Leave the gun in the car while you shop and research, then approach the dealers for trade offers once you are comfrtable with the values. You have a gun worth around $600 retail and a dealer should swap you about even for a gun he has a $600 price tag on. He may try to offer you a wholesale value against his retail priced item, but let him know that wont do.

i don't think the dealer will trade you or buy from you a gun at full retail...thats not how one makes money..people forget that dealers must must make money to survive...the tables he is selling from are not free nor is the stock sitting on them...

Good info ..... thanks for the responses.
I think I would trade it even up for an S&W M&P 45 with the 4" bbl.
Does that sound fair to both parties ??

NO, your gun is worth much more than an M&P 45.

Thanks guys ....... guess I should have kept quiet.
CQ, that was funny ...
I will go back to the drawing board, and reconsider what would be a 'fair' trade.
I appreciate your advice ..... both of you.
