If you had a grand to spend..........
I am looking for my next S&W and would like some ideas on what to buy. I have a little over $1000.00 to spend. I would like something that will hopefully increase in value. Ive got 3 Smiths now. A 65-2 4", 36-1 3", and a 60-9 2". What would be a good choice to round out the collection ? C

You could do a lot worse than a Model 17 or 18. Everyone needs a nice .22, just don't get one so nice that you wont shoot it. You should have a good chunk of change left over too.

True and I dont have a .22. It will definetly be shot. No safe queens or NIB guns for me but, I do like them to be nice and , I keep them that way. I was thinking of soe, mthing with adjustable sights for target practice. A nice target gun. Keep the ideas coming.

Actually, there are several that come to my mind. I think that everyone's collection of Smiths should include a M29, M27, M28, a snub nose M19 or M66 and a M36. You already have a M36 so any of the others would be a great addition to your collection. Of course, those are older Smiths, but I am an old guy who likes older Smiths. lol

Being a rimfire guy,I second the nice K frame .22 suggestion.
My other suggestion would be something like a 27-2 in the presentation case.( No new ammo needed, either!)
You don't have a N frame currently, and 27s are something special imo.(At the moment,I'm giving some thought to a nice one,nickel,6 inch, priced at 850.I probably would have pulled the trigger already if it was blue.)

High condition K22 3rd Model (pre 17, 5 screw).
Even a 98%+ gun would be a shooter for me. Just avoid holster wear the higher the condition the gun.
My K22's are my most shot and though not most expensive, favorite revolvers.
And the adjustable sights appear huge and black. Just like good sights should.

For pure shooting fun I would buy one of these
a 3.5 or 5 inch Model 27-2
a Model 28-2 with 4 inch barrel
a Model 29-2 with 4 inch barrel
All these are great revolvers and should hold their value if properly maintained.
But for just pure fun and versatility and for training new shooters a Model K22 or Model 17 is the ticket. You can get hours of entertainment and shooting fun for less than 20 bucks a box of 500 rounds.

I've just got to go down a little different path here. With three revolvers in hand, I think I might begin a quest for a serviceable mdl. 41...if an "electric" gun is out of the picture then I personally would be looking for another mdl. 34....

For $1000, you should be able to get a pretty nice K-22 and still have enough left over for a shooter grade model 30 or 31 in .32 long.

Ok, let's see, you have 2 J frames and a K frame. All in .38 Special or .357. Do you prefer one size over the other? I second the motion on a .22 if you don't have one AND if you don't reload. My favorite (only .22 revolver I own right now) is the J frame 34-1. There's one on Bud's last I looked for about six and a half - which is high. I 'only' have about four and a half in my recently acquired 34-1 (but that was a horsetrade). If you prefer the K frame, then in .22, you'd be looking at a 17 or 18 (I think). Or that K-22.
If you are thinking heavier calibers, then I would suggest test-firing an L or N frame. Personally, the N frames do not suit me. But I absolutely love my L frame 686-4 RB 4" and wouldn't sell it for anything.
Full disclosure; I have 2 J frames, 2 K frames and a L frame right now. My next revolver is going to be the Ruger SP101 in .22LR - as soon as they can build enough of them to fill their backorders!

A Model 1917 in .45 auto in as good condition as you can find. The 100th anniversery of WW1 is coming may drive up the prices.

I agree with the .22 idea. You should also consider a 3" 65 or a 2.5" 66, they are both excellent carry guns. With a little bargin hunting, you could get two nice revolvers for a grand.

If I had $1000 to spend I'd go for a model 16.
However I'll throw my vote in with the people who suggest a m26 or m27, or even m29. Should be able to get a shooter way under 1g.
You need a N-frame, son.

Absolutely! Anyone who shoots should have a K22 of some type - and there is no need to spend $1000 to get one.

I think I would be looking for an N frame 38/44 Outdoorsman. They make great shooters & are sure to rise in value!

K-22 or Model 17 and a 4 inch Model 28-2. You can still find nice example of both for $450 to $600 each though the .22 will probably be the higher. The 28's are a load of fun to shoot and a little wear on a working gun looks "right".

Thanks guys! I will go in search of a nice K-22. I do a LOT of range shooting so, it will be nice to save the money on ammo and still get some good practice time in. I will post once I find one !

Seeing as how you already have two J-frames and a K-frame, your collection needs an N-frame of some sort. Since you already have guns with 2, 3, and 4 inch barrels, I'd recommend something in 6", a Model 28 Highway Patrolman or a Model 27. Maybe even consider the 8-3/8" version of the 27 if you have any inclination to do some long range handgunning.

I will throw a wrinkle in the K-22 suggestion and spend all of that $1000 for you. How about a model 53 with both cylinders. You have a nice .22lr and if you want to do a little small game hunting or long range shooting you can fire the Jet. If bought for a good price and maintained can't see it going down in price.
Available in 4" 6" and 8 3/8" barrel lengths.

What's interesting about this post...
I've had a silly itch to buy some sort of 1911 recently, and have spent a lot of time on various 1911 websites. It's funny - in the 1911 world, a thousand bucks is really not a lot of money, you are still only in the mid-range, at best, with that kind of price tag. But in the S&W world, that much money opens up so many possibilities.
Granted, you're talking used S&W versus new 1911's, but still... it's got me thinking about the many options available to me...

I was just telling my daughter that I wish I had $10,000. I could spend it all on N frames and just be getting started (Python, Anaconda, Diamondback, Series 70, SAA).
Funny, I could drop $800 on a vintage S&W and not even blink, but it always feels like too much for a new bunk bed, a trip to Disneyland, tires and car maintenance... stuff I really should be buying. I'm sick.

It is amazing how much cash many of us walk around with at gun shows. Although, I never take cash. Just take guns to trade....honest

I hear ya'.I'll drop a significant amount in a heartbeat on a rifle that I know will only be a safe queen, but have to talk myself into a new, larger TV,(that costs less than 500) that I'll use many hours every day.

For a Thousand dollars
You can get the biggest one there is. I paid $999 for my S&W500 and I have never regretted. It is a BLAST to shoot and as soon as they classify them as armor pircing cop killers thy will probably be worth their weight (5lbs) in gold

Try and find two Smiths for the 1K.
Get some nice "trade" Smiths and work from there.

I have to agree with the majority here who suggest a K22 / M17. A great gun and in the $500-$600 price range for a nice one. My second choice would be a K38 / M14. There didn't seem to be much love for them in the previous posts, but the old time bullseye shooters can't all be wrong.
You could almost do both for your $1,000. Buy the best condition you can afford. S&W prices have been going up as fast as the stock market is going down.
Good luck in your hunt.

I'd suggest a 29 or 629 in .44 magnum and a 25-5 or 625-5 in 45 Colt. Both are great guns and will hold their value..especially the pre-locks. No collection isn't complete without at least one of each.

A grand will buy you a lot of revolver. You ought to be able to find a really nice shooter grade model 17 or 617 in the $500-700 range. A used 27 in excellent condition, $700 or so. A used 29, also in good condition, about the same price or maybe a little less. In other words, if you budget $1000 for your next handgun, you should be able to find something very nice for less than that and have a fair chunk of change left over for a nice holster and at least a few hundred rounds of ammo.

No, what's funny is how quickly I went from "$750.00 for a (insert most anything here) . to "Wow. 'Only' $750.00 for that Model 27? I'll take it."

My vote would be for something in a 45 .............
This was about a grand before I bought the ivory grips for it.
Good luck

I'd go with an early Model 41 or K 22. Both are a lot of fun and like a lot of quality firearms will be worth as much or more than you paid for them down the road if used with care. I like them crisp, but with just a touch of wear so I don't have to pay the huge premium for a mint gun which I am just going to use anyway. Take your time and get a good gun you'll smile every time you put it in your hand.

K-38 6" you seem to like the caliber, the gun is beautiful.
K-22 beautiful gun, low priced ammo= lots of fun
M 27 just because it's one of the prettiest guns I know.
M 28 4" I own one, it's a joy to shoot.
M 29-2 4" I sold mine
I wish I could buy any of those for 1K down here!
A poor condition 17 is in the $ 700-800 range, a K-38 is almost a ghost here and a nice 27 will lower my reserve by 1500 to 2000 US dollars.
Any combination of 2 of those 5 guns will guarantee your inversion and give you lots of fun.
Regards, Alejandro.
