Default Send to S&W for Crown Job?

One of recent acquisitions is another retired cop revolver. For some level of insanity I can't resist adopting these neglected waifs.
This one's all nice except for a ding in the crown that upsets into one of the lands. My first thought was to have at it with a countersink in my drill press. Thinking better of that, it appears that it (and maybe me, too) will need professional help.
Question is: Is this a job that needs to be handed to Springfield?

I would think a competent gunsmith in your area should be able to do it well, and probably cheaper

Ah, those key words! Lots of "gunsmiths" in my neck of the woods, some of them I'm not sure about the competent part!

I will ask around.

thanks.

If you want to add some more "tools" to your inventory, Brownell's and I am sure lots of other places sells crowning bits, with the appropriate handle, the ones I've seen were T-Handles. There are pilots that go into the bore for keeping everything straight on, and a cutter head.

Hard to tell how much damage there is from your pic but this: 45° BRASS MUZZLE LAP - Brownells and some lapping compound may be enough to fix it.

Looked at that tool. Hard to image, but whatever the cop did with this one actually got down into the land a bit. Very hard to image it. It's going to need more than a "buff and polish" for sure.

Compare this cost to what it would cost to either send it to Sprinfield or take it to a local.

79° MUZZLE CROWNING CUTTER - Brownells

STEEL PILOTS - Brownells

BARREL CHAMFERING ACCESSORIES - Brownells

I would think a nearby, competent smith could handle it, but I have to ask, how does it shoot?

Gunny, I confess that I haven't. Looked bad enough that I just wanted it fixed.
Went over to Salem today and checked with the owner of the best gunshop in town. He recommended a 'smith who specialized in weapons machine work. I guess a good sign is that there was a vehicle from the Marion County Sheriff SWAT team parked there. Those guys were having a sniper rifle built there, so there's some comfort in his machining ability.
