4" Model 27-2 with SN on Grips
Hey Folks:
Quick question....Today I picked up a really nice 4" Model 27-2 that, according to the SN, was made in 1973. Got it home and did the typical "wipe down" and pulled the grips off to check the frame and was a little surprised to see that the grips were SN'ed to the gun. Can anyone tell me when S&W stopped putting the SN on the grips?
I've been looking for a 4" model 27 for sometime and came on this one purely by accident. Went in a local sporting goods store with the wife for her to look for Christmas presents and...of course...while she was doing that, I wondered over to the gun cabinet. Excellent condition...not fired much. Owner said a lady brought it in, was her husbands that had passed, and he was selling it for her.
Early Christmas I guess.
Anyway, thanks for your help.

It's my understanding that Magna's (service stocks) were number to the gun and Targets were not. Congrats!! Got pics? OH, and Welcome to the Finest Forum on the Net!!!

It has Magna's on it so that sounds right. Yeah...I'll get a picture and post it...in a bit.
Thanks,

Great find! Agree with rags, about the serial number on magnas not target stock. We love to see pics here, and welcome to the site.

OK...here's a very bad picture taken in the house. I'll do better when I can get it outside. I replaced the "numbered" factory grips with some smooth stag I had. It's a beautifully clean Model 27. And I've never owned one in a 4" before. I'll do a better picture when I can. The flash really hurts it.
Thanks for looking.

the standard catalog, 3rd edition, says that S&W stopped numbering stocks in the "mid to late 70's"......your's should be numbered....good find.

Very nice. Congratulations are in order, ... and I wouldn't worry about it being a 5" gun.
