Perhaps someone at the factory saw "SSR" on the box label and thought "six-shot revolver" .
PS Yes, I know "seven" also starts with the letter "s" - just roll with it...

The 686 SSR is only offered by Smith & Wesson as a 6-shot revolver.

Not only was a 7 round cylinder bored for 6 it looks like a terrible job securing that baby in the vice or something, leading edge of some holes looks bad. How in the world did that thing even get mounted on a frame, that could kill someone if its fired

The -C-R-A-F-T-S-M-A-M- that built S&W's in the 1920's, 1930's, and 1940's are rolling in their graves

Proper cylinder rotation would be a concern. If the ratchet and stop are designed to not travel as far you'll have big problems.

Hey folks,
The owner of this gun seems to want S&W to replace the cylinder, but he does not want to return the gun for replacement, and he wants to keep the cylinder for some unspecified reason. While I would expect S&W to be very willing to fix the gun and make the owner more than whole, I cannot imagine they would be willing to simply send him a new cylinder and not get the bad cylinder back. I would think S&W would have to have the gun to fit and time a replacement cylinder, and I cannot imagine they would be willing to allow the owner to keep a defective cylinder that could be a future liability problem.
When I first saw the picture, I wondered if the photo was a hoax. However, the owner insists this is the real deal. I sure am curious how this plays out as well as if we will ever find out the details as to how this problem is finally handled by S&W and the owner.
Best wishes,
Dave Wile

If the owner is reading I hope he sees this. That is unwise. Return the gun. Let S&W do their thing have a great gun and a happy life. If I were S&W, my reply to the requested service would be not only no but..............then Id send a certified letter stating that the owner assumes all risk and has declined warranty service, case would be closed forever.

the question is, would it be worth more as a curiosity that it is as a properly machined gun?
I just might be inclined to keep it as is and see what Ruger would be willing to pay me for it....

From the lead plating, its obviously been fired. That cylinder wall under the flute is scary thin. Maybe he was shooting .38 wadcutters or some equally mild ammunition.
