My best friend went to heaven today
I've mentioned my mini schnauzer Wilber a few times on other dog threads. He had a stroke this morning and couldn't get up. So we took him to our vet and put him to sleep. I thought I was prepared for this but I wasn't. When you've had a little friend for any length of time it is just painful. He was always a little dignified gentleman that always polite. He helped us raise all four of our girls. After reading this post over I think I better quit. Just babbling. God, I'm going to miss him.

From a home that always has Schnauzers our deepest sympathy.
Wilbur was just as blessed to have a family that cared for him as you were to have his friendship.

Wilbur will be waiting at the bridge. It is harder for me to lose a faithful buddy like Wilbur than a member of the family.
Hang in there, it will quit hurting someday.

Losing a loving, trusted/trusting and loyal dog is one of life's toughest experiences. Just remember the good times. I'm sure he will live in your heart forever. My sincere condolences on your loss. Someone once said that if dogs don't go to heaven, he wanted to go wherever they do, because it wouldn't really be heaven without them.

My deepest sympathies of your loss, as they say the last thing your pet will ever do is break your heart, take comfort that he is not suffering and/or in pain.

It's good that we can do this for our friends when the time comes, but it always feels so bad. They don't live nearly long enough. Our sympathy to you.

Sorry about your loss. I have lost pets, so I know what it's like.
We came extremely close to losing our dog, Husker, on Christmas day. After 5 days in the animal hospital on IV's, etc., he pulled through. We were convinced that he wouldn't make it and spent the day after Christmas mourning. My 11-year-old took it particularly hard. He said, "Husker is like a brother to me."

My deepest sympathy, he will be waiting for you at the bridge.
RainbowBridge.com
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

When I lost my lab after 14 years of joyful companionship the Vet made my loss a bit less painful reminding me that my dog had a happy life in a wonderful home. You too can find solice in the fact that you have given your precious dog a loving home and good life.

While I know you miss Wilber you still have him with you in your heart and memories. Wilber is in a great place where there are balls to chase, no aches and pains, and lots of dogs his size to play with while he waits for you and the rest of his loved ones to join him. Have peace knowing he had a great life here with you and your family.
All of us here feel your pain and wish you and your family peace and happiness.

I've got 2 mini's at home, 1 of whom is a black male named Ozzy, to say he's my buddy is to diminish the relationship we have.
Man, I'm sorry, I know what it's like to lose a 4 legged buddy, I guess that's all I can really say. Take care...

Thank you all for the very kind words and thoughts. I'm still trying to get my head around him not being here. But I'll see him again. As someone once said, " if there ain't no dogs in heaven, I don't want to go there". Amen to that.

A MAN AND HIS DOG
A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that his faithful dog had been dead for many years. He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. As he reached the wall, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch, and the street that led to the gate made from pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.
When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"
"This is heaven, sir," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water? We have traveled far," the man said.
"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up."
The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.
"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."
The man thought a moment, remembering all the years this dog remained loyal to him and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going. After another long walk he came to a plain dirt road, which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.
"Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water? We have traveled far."
"Yes, sure, there's a well over there." The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in and help yourself."
"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to his dog.
"There should be a bowl by the well; he is welcome to share."
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned well with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and gave some water to the dog, then he refilled the bowl and took a long drink himself. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them.
"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.
"This is heaven," was the answer.
"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell."
"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"
"No. We're just happy that they screen out the folks who'd leave their best friends behind."

monet61,I too am owned by a Schnauzer and don't want to ever say goodbye.
Most here love dogs and understand what your feeling.
It's OK and as Indiana George said,It takes time and then you realize that when you think of him you will catch yourself remembering him with fondness and good stories to tell of him.
Sometimes the tears are gonna come but you're gonna smile right through them.
Bless you and RIP Wilber.
PS I'll tell some of mine to welcome him in and I'm sure they'll keep him company while they wait for you and me.

We also had a great mini schnauzer die after 13 years that will never be replaced, but your local schnauzer rescue has plenty of good little schnauzers that need a home and could do some of the things that Wilbur did. It is never the same, but sometimes it can be almost as good.

Lost Lady in 1980, to this day I still carry her dog license on my key chain. It is really tough because they are so loyal and dedicated, I really know how you feel.
