Default Another home security addition

I had to put my 2 year old German Sheperd to sleep on Thursday morning. He was 2 years old and I had gotten him trained almost perfect. He would be the first dog to attack an intruder that crossed the property line and ignored all of the warning signs of "this is bad idea to break into this house". He had acute kidney failure and they just stopped working. It took about a week from fully working to not at all, very sad and tragic. I learned on Saturday that Pig Ears are extreemly hard on the dogs kidneys. I wish I would have known that before, all the pet stores sell them for cheap and the dogs love them. I would give him 2 day and i thought i was doing a good thing for his teeth and bones, Wrong. what I did was kill my own dog and i am really upset about it. If you have a pooch and give him/her pig ears to chew on, BE WARNED.

Sunday I picked up a new AKC German Shepherd. He is 6 weeks old and we named him Ruger. This means, "Whiner or Narc in German". It should mean, "poops and pisses everywheer and distroyer of shoes". I will be training this one for the same job as the other with some modifications. I will want him th tackle the intruder and hold the neck just short of breaking and killing the subject until I can get my rock salt shells loaded or till I get home. He will be assited by my other two dogs, Rott and Mastiff, if there should be a problem and cannot handle it on his own. I should have the training completed in 12-16 months. The other one would just start eating the intruder while mawling them. I will post a pic when i can get the little **** to sit still long enough.
If you did not read the first "home security" post, its definetly worth the read. I was making a point, shooting the buger should be a last resort or maybe a personal favor to them. its found here in this thread, Home defense - know your rights

I'm terribly sorry for your loss.

Is your vet sure it was the pig ears? This concerns me because a lot of dog people I know give pig ears for treats. This is the first I've ever heard of them causing kidney failure. I know they can carry salmonella and there have been recalls for that. That can also cause intestinal blockage.

There are seemingly ongoing problems with the Chinese putting stuff like Melamine in food and food ingredients that cause kidney failure. Chicken jerky treats were a problem late last year and best I know they still are.

Is there any chance at all your dog might have gotten ahold of antifreeze?

I'm sorry if I'm being too nosy...

there is no way in hell the dog could have gotten into anti-freeze. The vet thought it was something else, lepto-something, we had him tested for that because it can be passed on to humans. the test was neg. The vet did not say is was the pig ears. My neighbor dog passed away as well and he had been giviving the dog the same pigears I had been giving my dog. His vet commented to him about this and said most of those come from China and there has been multiple cases in the area, they all have had that in common. The owners have all given their dog these. He said nothing else was the same, not the areas of exersize, diet, etc excpet this. It may not have been the pig ears themselves but maybe a chemical used in them. All I know is I will not take the chance again with anything of that nature. I'll do with it as I do with all the firearms I buy and have, MADE IN AMERICA! as we all sould do with everything, just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm pretty careful what I give my dog but even items that say "Made in America" can have ingredients from elsewhere. The law on that is incredibly lax.

Again, I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. Lots of us here know what it's like.

I sure ya'll do. Last May we had to put our oldest one down also. He was 9-1/2 years old. He had a hip replacement when he was yonger and that was going bad and he was rtying his hardest to be there for us and we knew it. He was a great dog too. He was 1/2 black lab and 1/2 rott. he weighed in a 130lbs, nothing but muscle. He was aloty easier to say goodbye to beacuse of his age and the other problems he had, we knew that he was not in good shape for a couple of years. We had already gotten the other one and had him for a little over a year and we wanted the older one to mentor him before we had to say goodbye. he did a great job, we never had to do any of the potty training with the younger one. This one on the other hand is going to be a little more difficult because the other breeds are older and don't quite have the temperment for a puppy, they are also unsure about him right now, that will change with time.
