Default 686 Lew Horton Question-New Information

Any idea of a selling price of a 686ND 2 1/2" between individuals? The box has the product code to indicate it is a Lew Horton from 1984 but this has not been verified. It is NRA Very Good. Scratches from carry, good size nick or two on the combats, but shot little with tight lockup. No papers.

I'm thinking $500 is a ballpark figure for the condition you have described.

My guess is $550.00-$650.00. Heck the darn combats are selling for 150.00 alone.

I have to say this. The only S&W I ever owned that didn't shot accurately at 25 yards and beyond was a 2.5" 686 snub. Bought it after shooting a friends 2.5" That was a shooting machine! Sent it back to S&W and they replaced the barrel on it but it still did not shoot to my standards at 25 yards which is a 3" group or better from a good rest with no coffee. Sold it for a pretty good loss and let the guy know it's history. He din't care as he was using it for a house weapon. My 3" 686 is a entirely different story. Think I just had the occasional lemon and was not going to put more money into it.

They are excellent revolvers and will last generations!

Thanks guys. I was thinking around the $500 to $550 mark would not be unreasonable. I called Lew Horton and they said it was not shipped to them, but oddly another 686 eactly 5 numbers away was. I called Smith and Wesson and they said it was manufactured in 1985, not in 1984 as the book contends a Lew Horton would be. As it does not have a white outline rear sight, I was thinking it was probably not a Lew Horton.

Sportsterguy I appreciate the heads up. I shoot my Smiths, and if it will not hold a decent group at 25 yards, I do not want it. I had a 2001 686-6 with the dreaded IL, and it would shoot excellent groups all day long. But alas, I could not get over that lock and traded it away.

You're welcome. That's a beauty you have there. Was not in any way trying to trash the snubby 686 as most of my S&W's have 2.5 - 4" barrels on em and shoot very well. Horton/Snorton. Thats a fine revolver you have there no matter who distributed it. I'd buy another but my 3' is all I need. It is a tack driver and a limited edition model. I shoot my 4" 586 much more than the 686 and the accuracy is amazing. Got it real cheap as it has a couple of small flaws in the nickel from the previous owner storing it in his holster that don't bither me at all. It will shoot a 1.5" group at 25 yards which is darn good in my book.
