Default Why do you have many of the same gun?

I was just wondering. Some members here have multiples of what looks to be the same firearm. For example you may have 6 j-frames, or 4 k-frames. Why is this? Is 1 just not enough or are they all different?

I just like the idea of having a wide variety firearms, not just a lot of 1 or 2 models.

They all need homes. Actually, I am always looking for great deals. So, if I see something that is quality and it is what I shoot, I buy it knowing I get to shoot it (even though I may already have 2 or 3 more) and it is better than money sitting in the bank,,,, LITERALLY.

But they Aren't necessarily all alike. They just appear to be at first glance. For instance:

You've got your no-dashes, your dash-1s, dash-2s, etc.
You've got your round-butts and your square butts.
You've got your pencil barrels, tapered barrels, heavy barrels, standard barrels, short barrels, long barrels, longer barrels, etc.
You've got your alloy frames and your steel frames.
You've got your nickel, blue, parked, stainless, and pinto finishes.
You've got your diamond grips, magnas, targets, cokes, pc, service, stag, plastic, ivory, goncalo alves, rosewood, walnut, etc.
You've got your P&R, non-P&R, P but not R, etc.
Ypu've got your fixed sights, your half-moon sights, your ramped sights, your adjustable sights, your Patridge sights, your Baughman sights, your red-ramp sights, your white-outline sights, etc.

Somebody help me with this!

Well, I have different calibers in N frames and colt single actions. I have a lot of guns but no two are exactly the same. One benifit is I can get by with fewer holsters. For instance in N frames I have a .44 mag model 29-2 and a 27-2 .357 both in 5"s, and a 25-5 in .45 colt and a 24-3 in .44 special, both 4"s. Then I have colt single action armys in .45 colt and .44 special, both in 4 3/4"s.

I believe in both diversification and, where warranted, specializing. I have a variety of different Smiths from different eras, but there are also models and classes of S&W that I don't have, and won't, because they simply don't interest me. I guess I am a multiple non-owner for such models.

On the other hand, there are some models that I just absolutely love, and I try to get as many of these as I can. I can make the "investment" argument for the rare ones, or the less rare guns in collector condition, but truthfully I think I might be acquiring such guns even if the potential for increased value was much lower or even absent.

Basically, some models just speak to me. There are members here who have dozens of 1917s, or dozens of .38/44s, or dozens of K-22s, or dozens of Model 29s. I don't have dozens of anything, but I do have more Prewar .22/32 Kit Guns than any other model, and I wouldn't mind having more. There are a few models where I have both a shooter grade gun and a collector-level specimen or two. But these don't really feel like owned multiples to me; even if I never sell or trade, these feel more like collector trading stock.

I guess everybody has his own flavor of obsessive-compulsive disorder. If I had the money, I suspect I would have (or try to have) the world's best collection of Volcanics. But I doubt I will ever have a single one. So it goes.

I have not buying or selling guns much for quite a few years. The majority of my collection I built up in the 70s and 80s. I like smiths, colts and winchesters are all my main intrest. By educateing myself in what I liked many years ago let me find more deals than just specializing in one brand or just a couple models of it. With a lot of reading I was able to reconise models of other guns that were rare etc that I wasnt really hot for but I could turn them over to help pay for the ones I liked. I say if your intrest is narrow, you need more money and patcence than if you let yourself be more flexable, knowledgable with other brands to build your collection.

I have four children, and a wife. That means that everyone needs a 1911 and an AR clone. Same caliber, same mags, all works the same way. That's two types requiring a half dozen examples of the same type right there.

As far as duplicates go-I have a pair of 629 no dashes-a pair of 629-2 unfluted's-and a pair of model 59's. Anyone knowledgeable about S&W hand guns would understand why I have these: because I had the oppurtunity to acquire them! Flapjack.

I do not have multiples of the same gun. I like diversity. Then I looked at my meager accumulation of Smiths and realized that I have mulitiples of the same gun. I have 3 M19-3's and a M66-1. Of course there is a reason for that. The M19's all have different "finishes", blue, nickel, Two Tone, and I have the M66-1, stainless. So that is not like I have mulitiples in the same gun....well, maybe it is. Geez, looks like I have a problem....nevermind.

"... or dozens of K-22s,..." ah yes David, I remember back when I had my first dozen K-22's. That's been a few years ago.

To the OP, there's some crazy SWCA member that's tryin' to get a K frame rimfire from EVERY YEAR from 1953 'til about 1990!

I know... I don't understand it either.

I never walk away from a good deal. Once had 12 model 10's, none of which I had paid more than $150. Wish I still had them.

Because they looked so sad up there on a rack, surrounded by Sigs...and (looks around)...Glocks and such things. Very sad situation for a nice revolver to find itself in. It's my boundin' duty to rescue as many as I can.

I would consider myself an accumulator of all sorts of quality firearms but there are certain models and calibers/gauges that I have multiples of. For me, If I have one really nice example, I want to find at least one more to go with it. I guess I just like seeing them in groups

Why on earth would i need 20-30 .410 shotguns!? I dont even know! But I do know they're never leaving me! Its a sickness, really is. Dont try to figure it out you'll just hurt yourself thinking.

Another reason for me to add more or more of the same gun is PRICE....I cant resist a great deal, and its better than $$$ in the bank and I work at a BANK!

You must be looking at them upside down:

Because I can.

But somebody up above is sick. 12 model 10s? I don't own a single one. See, I'm normal.

I don't consider two 44 p&r s' enough. I'd like to have a dozen like it in 4".

One in the case is unfired. I can have my cake and eat it too, so to speak.

Because I want to.
Because I have two hands and therefore require two of each S&W revolver.
Because I like them.
Because I can't stop.
Because my wife doesn't care.
Because it keeps me out of the Pubs and Cat Houses.

If you have to ask, you'll never get it.

You do own more than one pair of underwear, don't you?

Lastyear or so i just purchased my very first S&W N Frame revolver in 41mag. Model 57 w/6 1/2'' barrel in nickel. I went back after my S/S check for the month came and got the S&W Model 58 w/4'' 41mag in nickel too. I do own a K-22 22cal masterpiece revolver but i'm hooked on the N Frames. The balance and weight just feels right.

I have several J frames, some are square butt, others are round butt. Mix in Airweights, "hammerless" and shrouded hammer models, blued, nickeled and stainless steel versions the "need" to own many becomes clearer. Ditto for K frames which also come in a variety of barrel lengths. My safe is getting full and I haven't even started collecting L frames or N frames yet...

I always tell my wife "A man doesn't play a round of golf with just one club.".
Seems to have worked.

I have two sons that are fourteen months apart. They are 8 and 9 and will soon be shooting a lot more with me. I buy two of everything (even full house customed 2 different 1911s) knowing one day, I will with great pleasure, pass my guns onto them....so in my case, its just a must to buy two of each caliber as an heirloom. or so I tell myself. Plus I get to add memories to the guns before they get passed on...they will be more valuable to my kids knowing these were guns dad shot and carried.
