Model 19-3 Center Pin Question (wanted)
Hello, I've been a lurker on the forum for about 6 months and finally purchased a Model 19-3 revolver and I need the help and expertise of the members.
My issue is when first removing the ejector rod for cleaning (as the cylinder didn't spin freely) the ejector rod sheared off inside the cylinder. I was able to get it out but ruined the center pin in the process.
I ordered replacements from S&W but the cylinder pin is about an 1/8 inch too short and does not protrude out the back of the cylinder to engage the frame.
Any idea on why the new center pin is shorter than the original and where I can get one that works?
Thanks

It is hard to believe the center pin is too short in the way you mention. Did you compare the new one with the old one from the collar to the ball (rear) und of the center pin? If they are the same length then there is something inside the extractor blocking the center pin, or you are assembling it incorrectly, how I cannot even contemplate. If there is a difference in the length of the center pin behind the collar it is not impossible you received a defective part. Call S&W customer service and discuss it with them.
For some reason there are many who do not seem to understand that the vast majority of parts for S&W revolvers, regardless of where they are purchased, were manufactured by............S&W! Naturally the first place to look for S&W parts is S&W.

ALK8944,
Thank you for your reply. I see you're from Sandy and I live not too far away in Orem.
Admittedly this is my first revolver purchase and can't say with conviction that I know what I am doing but the photos are of the two center pins side by side. The longer one is the original and the shorter is the replacement from S&W. The overall lengths are the same, and just the collar position is different.
The second photo is the replacement center pin in the cylinder. I actually thought they sent me the wrong one and had a replacement sent out but it was still the same.
Are there differences with the center pin with different model year 19's?

Centerpin lengths differ according to barrel length, there may be differences by dash number, but I'm not certain about that. 2 Suggestions:
1. Measure the length from collar to tip on both and notify S&W parts /customer service department of the differences. Have the model number and barrel length of yours available if you call, note it in the message if you use email/snail mail. Could be someone dropped the wrong parts in the wrong bin and they're going by part #.
2. No insult intended and the pix make this a REAL long shot, but you did put the center pin in before you installed the little spring that powers it, right?

Hello,
Thanks for all your help.
I've measured the center pin and while the overall lengths are the same, the length from the collar up on the original one is 1/8 inch longer (making it 7/8 inch instead of the 3/4 inch on the replacement). There is a definite difference in the center pins (which I ordered twice to make sure).
At this point, while looking at the diagram multiple times while putting it together I can say confidently that its not installation error.
I've emailed Smith customer service but yet to receive a reply.
Is there perhaps a difference between the recessed cylinder models and non recessed for the center pins?

Shouldn't be. SFAIK, they didn't change the frame window and the end of the pin still had to go past the headspace button to lock the cylinder in place.
Checking part numbers for various 19 dash showed no change for a 2 inch barrel from no dash to dash 5. They didn't show other part numbers, assume they remained the same.
A J frame center pin?

You got the wrong part. It happens in every parts operation for every product.
Just contact the vendor and get the proper part.

I actually received the same part twice (07472). Just called them a third time and the rep was confident I got the wrong one...I'm not so sure.
I dug this pic up from another thread on the forum.
( Center pin problems, again)
The middle one is the one I need, the top one is the one they keep sending me.
Any ideas on where I might track it down?

OK, thanks to Alk8944 pointing me in the right direction I was able to find the correct center pin at Jack First Gun. According to them, the correct center pin is NOT listed in the S&W Catalog. S&W only carries center pins for 19-5 and above pistols.
Thanks for everyone's help
