Default Thinking about a project handgun

I saw on here a while back where a guy had a Model 28 Smith that was in pretty rough shape, nothing worked. I have thought about looking for a gun like that as a project gun for a hunting / carry rig. It does not have to be a Smith, but I would either want one of those or a Ruger and only in .357 Magnum. I guess I am looking for a long term project so if it takes me a while to have it redone / rebuilt I would not care, since I believe redoing a gun is like restoring a car. It should be done and done right. I guess I am looking for ideas and suggestions along those lines. I think as long as the frame and barrel is ok everything else should be workable. We'll see where this goes.

This is something that interest me also. It would be a learning experience and add something new to this gun hobby. Now I've got to start looking for a junker gun, that's different.

Parts availability matters. And refinishing can be pricey. I've had the best experiences with military weapons when the stars are aligned--1911s, Garands, and so forth. I might take on a M10-3 Aussie next though.
