Best S&W day of my life!
An old gentleman I know from my work at the LGS is parting with some gems and gave me first dibs! His son brought over three revolvers tonight, one of which was a 5-screw Highway Patrolman made around '56-'57. It is not pristine, but it is older than I am and in a lot better shape than me. I am pretty sure the stocks have been replaced. The frame is stamped with 78 175, which his son and I presume is the 78th troop of the Ohio State Patrol. He also brought an 18-3 and a 2 1/2 inch 19-3. Great way to end the day!

Excellent, three times over!
You are right about the HP stocks; they are post 1968 targets (no diamonds around the escutcheons). The original stocks for a five-screw HP would be diamond magnas if you want to go authentic on this gun. But if you like a bigger handfull, the stocks on it will do just fine.
The stocks on the 18-1 are also not original, as that gun would also predate 1968; again, diamond magnas would restore a degree of authenticity but are hardly necessary. The wood on the 19-3 could be original.

David, thanks for the details! Not sure if I will push to make them original, but like to have the info so I can keep a look out for OEM stuff. I will post the HP info on the Ultimate HP thread soon. Thanks again for your help.

Great day - indeed! Maybe he has more in the safe and you'll have a great tomorrow as well. Enjoy those old guns,

I specifically said, "I hope he doesn't have any more, because I am out of money!" His son assured me that this was the last of the good ones. I had bought a lovely 29-2 from him several years ago, which is how he knew I was a sucker for Smiths!

Very nice trifecta !
David would be right about the grips if it was an 18-1 ,
If it is an 18-3 the non diamond Magna grips are correct.
Thanks for sharing them.
