Odd S&W Box from uncle
When my uncle passed I received his stuff as he had no children and I was the oldest nephew. He was a former California highway patrolman and I received his service revolver, a Colt Python. But included in his affects was a bright red Smith and Wesson metal box. Since the python dates to the late 50's and I'm not a real Smith guy can you guys tell me if Smith ever shipped service revolvers in metal boxes.
And I guess I'm sort of a Smith guy now as I also received his back up gun. An old no dash model 39. Did the model 39 possibly come in that red box?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Bill

Hello Bill, welcome to the forum. I have never seen a S&W shipped in a red metal box and especially not a Model 39. About the only S&W's I recall shipped in metal boxes were the Staight-Line target guns but the box was not red.

There was a smaller flare gun kit (for boats) that came in a steel box.

Sorry I don't have another photo but it's just an open tube, smooth bore with about 1/8" walls.

Sorry for the lack of attention, the box looks like it was for a revolver.
Did Smith make a special CHP revolver? Hsguy, I didn't think it was for the 39 but I omitted that in the post. I'll see if my children can take a pic and I'll post it ASAP. I'm sort of techno savy I just don't have a digital camera.
